On my 95 i had to go through the trunk, fold the back seat down and you can get at them, pull the covers down and loosen the nuts they come right out. The factory size is 6x9.

In my 96 grand am se I replaced my rear speakers earlier today. I removed the whole back seat, removed the side panels above the back deck, slipped the seatbelts out the slots in the back deck, lifted it out and there were the speakers ready to be taken out. installing the side panel pieces is the hardest part.

Yeah, be easy with the side trim panels, they are easy to snap the mount areas off of.
