Can anyone tell me where and how to replace the camshaft position sensor on the 2000 malibu 3.1L V6.
Also after the new sensor is replaced anything special that I have to do for the computer to figure out the new sensor? Thanks

I believe it is covered in the Haynes manual. I replaced mine when i was replacing the Intake Manifold Gaskets. It is on the top of the block below the power steering pump. I do not know if you can get it out without disassembling the top of the engine though.

I have a 1998 3.1 and replaced mine during the intake manifold replacement. Just prior, I was getting codes for the camshaft position sensor. When I was able to see it, it was clear the wire casing was schriveled and fayed from the hot coolant leaking on it.

Caused my tachometer to act screwy, but the vehicle ran.

Not sure how much the 2000 differs but the CPS was located on the passenger side, just to the side of the intake manifold , on top of the engine. It is better seen if the power steering pump is removed.

Had to get it from the dealer and just a small simple bolt holds it in place and I did not need to reset the computer. When you pull it out it looks like a ~3" black cylinder with a beveled edge.

I have a 1998 3.1L and need to get my camshaft position sensor replaced. You said in one reply that you posted a pic on how to do this. How can I get this and is it really hard to replace. I took mine to one mechanic and he was taking the right front wheel off and going to the front of the car. I believe it is in the back, correct? Anyway, he said I need a two prong sensor, it comes with 3 prongs, I personally think he is trying to change the wrong item. Anyway, ANY HELP you can give me on this would really be great.

Well I replaced it myself. Don't remember if it was 2 or 3 wires but I'll tell you one thing, you MUST take out the power steering pump in order to get to the sensor!!! With the power steering pump you can't even get access to the sensor. It's right underneath the pump.
Also, I think you may want to find another "mechanic". Also, I bought my sensor at Autozone and it was less than $35 and the instructions tell you how to calibrate the sensor for your car.

What did you have to do to calibrate the sensor?
