Ok so I have a 1978 Caprice Classic. And I am looking to replace my stereo system and speaker (yes singular, I only have 1 in the dash). Well I do not know how to go about it. It has the stock radio in the center of the dash. It is an AM radio only.

Well I am wondering how would I go about taking the old stereo out? And how would I go about installing a new CD player in its spo?

I am also interested in how I would go about installing maybe 4 6x9 speakers. 2 in the front, and 2 in the back?

I appreciate any help.

I OWN A 82 CAPRICE AND PUTTIN 2 6x9'S N DA FRONT IS JUST STUPID.IF U WANT SUM GOOD SOUND PUT ALL DA 6x9'S N DA REAR AND HAVE A SET OF SMALL SPEAKERS THAT WILL GO N DA FRONT. ALSO ADD SUM TWEETERS FOR UR HIGHS. THE 6x9'S ARE GONNA HANDLE THE MIDS. AND IF U WANT SUM LOWS PUT A SET OF 12'S N DA TRUNK. WELL BOUT DA RADIO, THE WHOLE UNIT CUMS OFF INCLUDIN THE HEATER CONTROL. UNSCREW THE TOP SCREWS ON IT AND GO FROM THERE. GO TO UR LOCAL STEREO SHOP FOR A KITFOR UR YEAR CAPRICE. ALSO GET A WIRING HARNESS FOR ALL THE HARNESSES THAT U UNPLUGGED FROM THA RADIO. HOPE THIS HELPS.

ok thats cool info and all but how much $$$ do they rape you for this kit and harness plugs and all that ??

i wont spend very much at all, id rather fab someway of doing it myself than spend on having some tech put it all in when i am perfectly mechanically inclined and have billions of tools and such, just want to see examples of how the intergrated heatr and sterio panel cars got aftermarket sterios or cd players installed but still have functional heater controls ?

where are all the details at ?

thanks

Go to scosche.com that’s the brand wire harness that wal-mart stocks. The wire harness that I used for my 83 is gm01. And on the front of the packaging it says 77-92 gm vehicles and on the back it covers all the models

thats what the harness looks like

good info thanks i appreciate

and i have one more Q right now though, sterio wire harness related one:

i notice that one of my sterio harness plugs on back of the original sterio unit has a completely melted up really bad wire, it looks to be a black one, after removing heater controls and sterio and mounting try and bracket and whole nine yards, and after cutting off tape insulation off the main harness back as far as i can towards drive side of the car, it completely melted all way to bare and separated the wire, i bet it made alot of smoke when it happened and there are hot arc marks on the black palstic windwhield defroster duct cases back in there behind sterio where harness plugs are with sterio installed,
the wire is with a larger yellow and a smaller yellow and a smaller gray wire, so four altogether

two yellows and a gray and a black, the black being the burnt up real bad one,

does anyone have any clue where this black one goes, it goes towards steering column/ fuse panel area of car and follows bottom the car dash goes under or over steering column i dunno yet as i havent cut open the harness that far away from sterio yet but i need to, somehow to separate melted together wires :O :(

why would they run a damned ground wire so damned far away and why would they wrap it up with damned hot orange and yellow wires ?!

thats freaking insane!

so please lemme know if you know what this black wire is for and where its going to, away from the sterio backside cuz i need to fix this and replace the wire,

and i wonder what the hell caused it to melt up and separate so bad
because the car is stock unmolested 100% only other than front sheetmetal doghouse swap from a parisienne

so thats just crazy!

thanks!

The black is most likely a ground. And my guess is that either something malfunctioned in the radio at one point, or one of the connections in the harness loosened up. The primary causes of electrical fires are loose connections, loose connections cause heat and can cause fire. After 17 years of driving even the tightest of connections can loosen up. Also check the fuse, someone could have replaced the fuse with the wrong one, if it had the wrong fuse it wont blow and can cause the wire to heat up. Just some ideas
