00 Tahoe A/C Breaks belts

I have a 2000 tahoe that keeps breaking the A/C belts. All the shops tell me it needs a new compressor. The compressor clutch seems to be working, the compressor turns by hand ok (feels smooth), the tensioner pulley is ok. I know there are several things it could be besides the compressor. Has anyone had this problem and been able to diagnose it.
I hate to replace the entire A/C system if its just one of the other components. Oh yeah, The compressor seems like it is binding above 3000 RPMs however the compressor is making no noise. Otherwise the systems works fine.

My 2002 Tahoe LT was doing the same thing. It took my mechanic 2wks to try everything before replacing the compressor. GM just put out a service bulletin explaining the problem. I had the belt replaced at 42k, at 45K belt broke....and broke, and broke. Service bulletin said to replace belt, replace fan clutch, and replace compressor. The compressor would lock up after we replaced the clutch. No noise from the compressor and it was cooling until something would cause it to lock and the engine would rip the belt to shreds. All in all...it cost me a lot to get fixed. All in all, Chevy lost a customer for life.

I went through the same pain. I have a 01 Tahoe LT
and I heard a chattering noise coming from the engine. It turned out to be the A/C compressore binding and causing the belt to slip. New compressor fixed the problem $500.00

Cheers
