Guys,

I am reading the factory service manual from Toyota for 97 Camry, and I am a bit confused. In the front brake caliper section, the manual calls for two different type of grease, they are Lithium Soap Base Glycol Grease and Disc Brake Grease.

After my extensive research, I have decided the "Disc Brake Grease" must be anything grease that can with stand high temperature and high pressure. Hence, Mobil1 Synthetic Universal Grease should do just fine with its 450 degree max temperature. Please correct me if I am wrong.

On the other hand, my 2 years search for Lithium Soap Base Glycol Grease turn up nothing. Not in a single store, google had fail, yahoo had fail... it is as if such product does not exist!!!

I figure someone must sell the dame thing... Help???? Oh, please don't tell me just to buy the Disc Brake Grease that is usually found in auto part store. If such product is indeed the Lithium Soap Base Glycol Grease, please provide some reference or explaination why don't they just label the package with Lithium Soap Base Glycol Grease!!!

Thanks

I too have seen that in factory Camry service manuals dating back to my 1986 Camry. I have never been able to find anything labeled like that. What I have used for years works well for me. For the slide pins in the caliper I use "Synthetic Disc Brake Grease". It comes in a tube like toothpaste. For the backs of the pads I use "Permatex Disc Brake Quiet". It comes in a spray can. It is a sticky substance that keeps the pads from vibrating in the calipers. I recently tried the Synthetic Disc Brake Grease on the backs of the pads as an experiment, but still had some brake noise. I cleaned it all off and went back to Permatex Disc Brake Quiet. I feel comfortable recommending these products.

The lithium based glycol grease is just standard chassis grease.

For the disc brake grease, only use grease labeled as disc brake grease, nothing else. Mike's recommendations are correct.

Will you explain why Disc Brake Grease is recommended for Disc Brake? From Mobil 1's web site, their Synthetic Universal Grease can also withstand the same high temperature as other Disc Brake Grease I have found in the automotive store.

If Mobil doesn't claim it can be used on brakes, you are using it at your own risk.

Lithium soap base glycol grease is only needed if you want to rebuild your caliper. You apply this special grease to the caliper piston and the O-ring before you put them together. This special grease will come with the Toyota genuine caliper repair kit. Metal to metal contact points should be lubed with a moly extreme pressure grease. Only a Small amount is needed to do the job right. e.g of metal to metal contact point is at the back of brake pad where it makes contact to the caliper piston. Metal- to -rubber parts should be lubed with a high quality silicone lube. The silicone lube will not damage the rubber parts and helps to form a moisture barrier.

I stand corrected - It is probably a synthetic grease instead of the garden variety dino lithium grease.

Wow, thanks for the explaination.

So, let me sum this up and correct me if I am wrong,
1. extreme pressure for matel to matel...
2. Silicone to protect the rubber, since dino grease weaken the rubber
3. Lithium soap base glycol grease for caliper piston, but why??? can I get those without buying the rebuild kit?

Thanks

Lithium soap base glycol grease is compatible with brake fluid since both of these products are made from ethylene glycol, so if you don"t have glycol grease use brake fluid instead. Soak your caliper piston, caliper cylinder and piston seal with brake fluid before them together.I think you can get this glycol grease from toyota dealer without buying the rebuild kit.

Thanks, I am now all clear...

I have decided to use Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Synthetic Caliper lube for the following, since it says it will not weaken rubber and is for high temperature.

Caliper Sliding pin, Brake pad back shim and brake pad ear.

I will be using the Lithium Soap Base Glycol Grease for any part that may come in contact with brake fluid...

Thanks, all.
