Depends on the displacement do you have a L4 or a V6? Sixs will run hotter than fours. I've got a four and it normally runs about 140-160 degrees and I don't drive all that slowly.

Does the oil or coolant need replaced? Also there could be a block in the coolant line or radiator. Does the fan run when it hits 220?

Well I have a 1995 Grand Am SE 2.3 4 Banger...and mine runs normal at 220 because my fan doesnt work...like at all...but anywho like he/she said around 160 is normal when conditions are good...but mine overheats just sitting at a redlight religously so ur not telling anything i dont already know but you might check both upper and lower radiator hoses...your thermostat...cuz if its going to 220 with the a/c running then you most likely have a stuck thermostat and its not kicking your fan off and on cuz i have a 195 thermo so i dont know what you have put in yours...hit us back if anything helped....later

220 a bit high, but like above, does the fan run okay, do you do a lot of idling in traffic, or is it more a running temp.?

I'm not positive (because my a/c isn't currently working) but the fan should always run when the a/c is on. The 30 degree increase is normally attributable to the heat put out by the condensor, I'm assuming these temps are at idle because air flow should keep the temps lower than 220 if your cooling system is in good order.

my 95 gt quad 4 runs around 160-180 driving, and around 200 or so sitting, with or without the ac on. If you are hitting 220 driving with ac on, something is wrong, possibly thermostat, heater core or radiator are good places to start.
