i have a 2002 gt and i think the tranny is going. it started making a funny noise like a whine. it will make the noise until the shift point and then stops. it will do it in all gears but very bad in 1st. i think i have a powertrain warranty. what should i do? or is it even the tranny?

Sounds like the front pump in the transmission. Make sure that the fluid is at the proper level. If you have not changed fluid and filter recently that may be a place to start. If you have proper fluid level and the fluid is relatively new, take it to a transmission shop and see what they say. Usually they will diagnose the problem for free. If you are still under manufacturers warranty take it to the dealer.

Whenever i shift from reverse to drive, its a really rough jolt. I make sure to leave my foot firmly on the brake and it takes about a second and a half to engage. When i got my last oil change the technician was surprised to tell me that my transmission is overfilled by a quart or so, quite a bit. I heard that this is a very bad thing, any input?

As long as it isn't overfilled at the present time then don't worry about it. I would however check the flluid level now. It sounds like it may be low causing the rough shifting.

whenever i shift from park to reverse, is when i get my bad jolt. someone who listened to my car said that the speedometer cable could need lubed? i didnt know you needed to lube the cables. i have heard that if you have to much tranny fluid in, then the gaskets could leak. not sure though.

There is no speedometer cable thus no cable to lube. The speedometer works electrically via the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located in the tranny.

If the tranny is grossly overfilled it may cause aeriation of the fluid which may cause abnormal operation or worse yet come out the vent. You may also notice leaks that ordinarily would not occur.

No my transmission is currently overfilled. Where ever i take it they want to do a complete flush and i've heard bad things about that.

A lot of mixed opinions on the tranny flush. How many miles do you have on your GP?

To get some of the excess ATF out you could get one of those plastic hand pumps with siphon tube that you put down the dipstick tube and remove it that way. Beats dropping the pan unless you have to.

54k miles, he also said the tranny fluid is looking a bit dirty. Its not a clear pink, it's kind of a brownish pink.

With 54K miles its time for a tranny service. IMO - The best thing to do is do a regular filter and ATF fluid change not a flush. Just make sure the proper amount of quality ATF (Dextron-III) is put in. Its somewheres around 7.4 quarts when drained out. The total capacity of the 4T65E tranny is 10 quarts after a rebuild.

And I'd recommend using an AC Delco filter only. The part number is TF304, 25313825. Good luck!

I did the first tranny fluid change last week on my 01 GPGT. The front wheels were on rihno ramps. I drained all fluid into a 9-qt oil pan that was completely emptied prior. I left the tranny to drip for hour...

When I poured the used fluid back to 4-qt tranny containers, it filled exactly 2. The conclusion is 8 qts when drained out. My local store sells fluid in 1qt or 4qt container; get the 4-qt containers and you can put the old fluid back and return to the store.
