dome light on at random

The dome lights in my '99 suburban come on at random, driving, sitting in the driveway, whenever. Killed my battery after a couple of days, I didn't notice it until after I recharged the battery. There is a click under the dash when they come on and go off. It is about a 4 minute cycle, on and off. Any ideas? I pulled the fuse so it won't kill the battery again. The dealer says it might be the light controller which is combined with the keyless entry control, expensive part to replace when I'm not sure. Any help would be welcome.

Thanks

I had the same problem as well. If you want instead of pulling the fuse just use the dome override button on the light switch. My problem was exactly what you're having but it was the door pin switch for me. $10.00 @ the parts store. If you read some of the posts through here most all of them have the same problems. Try if you can to get it tested though before you start replacing parts. Or if your knowledgeable do some tests yourself save you money, that's for sure. Hope this helps if @ all.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the override button before I pulled the fuse, it didn't stop them from coming on. Is there an easy way to test the switches? I know a little about electrical stuff, but not alot.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure that the light is supposed to be off when you are checking the over-ride switch. Try it with the engine running. I just had the same issue and it was the pass side door switch. The dome light still came on when I used the key fob. It also took a little time to shut the light off if the door is open and I pressed the over-ride switch.

The dome override button should work any time a door is open. It is possible that a door switch and the override went bad at the same time. I would also check the tailgate switch.

I found that the override button won't shut the lights off, but if I wait for them to go out it will keep them from coming on again. I replaced the drivers side door switch because I broke one of the ears off that hold it in while checking it, didn't solve the problem.(Switch was only $5.99 at Autozone.) Can you tell me how to get at the pass side switch? Looks like if I get the glove box out I might be able to get at the switch. I can't figure out how to get the box out and don't want to break that too!!

Thanks

When you open the glove box, the top inside should be resting against a stop. You should be able to bend the glove box just a bit to get in behind it.

Turkey28- I have a few posts on this problem. Check the barn doors switches and just replace all the door switches. They are cheep and easy to just replace. I did have a bad override button that would not stay in and I replaced the headlight switch. I believe it is one of your door switches how every. Dave

No one has mentioned the rear side door switches. Are they ever a problem? Autozone doesn't carry them, just the ones for the front.
