Im in the process of getting a new engine, its in the shop now, but my dad says hes only going to let me get the 2.4 unless the 3.1 is a direct bolt in swap. so i need one of you guys to tell me wither its a direct swap, or not.

thanks ahead of time

NO... engine mounts are different, ECM and wireing will be different, about the only thing that'll bolt up will be the trans...LOL.

Besides... 2.4's have way more potential than the 3.1's for performance mods:naughty:

yea, why waste your time, its not a straight up swap, and the 3100 blows, i would atleast go with the 3400 if you want a V6 that bad. But GM built a supercharger for the 2.4L, they must know which motor is better to make a supercharger kit for it.

lol i like how you say the v6 blows... personally i would rather have low end torque than high end HP in any day of the week

So to say the 3100 doesnt blow its just not your thing.. so to make you feel better the Quad's blow there head gaskets always go and cost too damn much to fix...

Which motor you go with all depends on what type of driving you want to do. If you want performance, go with a quad, the cars with quads and a manual transmission are way faster stock than the v6 cars. If you want to drive like an old lady, go with a v6, they are not really all that fast off the line. And as for the head gasket crack, I just replaced the head gasket on my quad, it cost me $155 in gaskets and about 10 hours of my time to change it along with the timing chain (why not i had to take it off anyway), if it had been a v6 it would have been even more...

ya true but doing it yourself is alot cheaper but most people cant and in comparison most people wont be able to drop 1k for that job they just sell the car.. as compared to the 3100 where that prob is no wherenear the same frequency.. and as for me reliability is more inportant because specially in in our year of cars there isnt much point of dropping a whole ton of cash on em.. they arent worth it.
Also for me after riding in 600 hp blown 350 with all low end torque... there isnt anything like it.. ya it may not be as fast as a 600 hp turbo engine.. but alot more fun.. because where can you got 100+MPH or at least leagally since i dont street race no more.. and already had a very serious accident so for me its how fast you get to 100 hp... and also whiplash is great if you get it from accelerating not crashing

Well a blown 350 isn't gonna fit in a daily driver GA, nor would it be useful in fwd. There comes a point when there is too much torque, in light fwd cars like GA's it doesn't take much to launch the car. Extra torque just makes the tires spin, it's better to have a nice mix of torque, HP, and rpm.

ya true but .. when you have a car load of people i dont want the car chugging along.. i like the fact with the v6 you dont even notice your carrying anyone or very little..

The head gasket problems are common on the early (late 80s early 90s) And the POS OHC motors. Other then that its rare, and when you look into the 2.4L your not going to have that problem. Now lets talk about the 3x00 motors, have you ever price a lower intake manifold gasket R&R? Your looking at $700-$1,000 maybe even more at some shops. And these go ALOT on all the 3x00 motors. The only 3x00 motor in a grand am worth it is the 3400 other then that just get a quad.

the only quad i would get is the 2.4...i like the power for the little motor they are...they sound good when you hit them but im not into the 2.3's as much...did not ever like them and still dont. i like the 3.1 motors still...i really like the 3300 and 3400.....and 3800 but its extremely hard to put one in....alot of money, but i still would take the 3100 over the quad...dont realy know why, well I like the sound a little better, when you get in the high MPH range, the 4's start to slow up on getting to speed...while on the other hand, the 3.1, 3.3, 3.4...well most v6 still keep going....but if i were to have alot of money to mod a motor...hell i would take the 2.4 with a clean sweep.

If I wanted the best and didn't care about cost or amount of work I'd swap in a SC 3800 Series 2 (L67). If I wanted an easy swap I'd throw in another 2.4L. As for grandamdriver52's preference of the 2.4L over the 2.3L the 2.3L DOHC HO is better than the 2.4L. The 2.4L has 150HP while the 2.3 DOHC HO has 180HP. Even better, the W41's are 190HP straight from the factory. But that's just me and my car wouldn't take a 2.4L easily anyway.
