Police style Center caps? thermal izod 07-04-2005, 03:31 PM
I've got a base model Impala...the wheel covers are starting to look really beat up....very suddenly they are peeling up and looking weathered...I'm not willing to spend tons of $ on rims (not to mention it's hard to find any i like), and spending $50-100 on replacements seems stupid, considering my impala is 5 years old, been in florida the whole time, and the current caps are already looking so bad at 50K. On to the question....anyone know where i find cheap police style center caps? I'm willing to just ditch the covers totally....i've been looking on ebay.com under "2000 impala center caps" but I'm only finding the caps for the LS style alloy rims....anyone that can give me a heads up on this would be great....thanks! Fun driving..... bigrod118 07-04-2005, 09:31 PM yeah when you search ebay, use impala police center caps thermal izod 07-04-2005, 11:19 PM thanks, nothing there currently...but i'll keep checking... bermis519 07-05-2005, 10:55 AM just type in "impala police". Thats where i got mine.... mike thermal izod 07-06-2005, 05:23 PM anyone know any online retailers where I can get a good deal on center caps and the rings for the outside of the rim? i'm having trouble finding anything, anywhere... thermal izod 07-25-2005, 09:28 PM ok, i finally found some...how did everyone install them? i'm thinking drill the 3 mounting holes, then use the kit-included mounting bolts and some locking nuts on the back? any input from those that have done this already...please... Pat_OD 07-27-2005, 08:31 AM u cant use locking nuts on the back not enough room. the wheel goes right up against the rotor. You'll need to thread the holes with a tool bermis519 07-27-2005, 10:47 AM Make sure when you drill through those rims that the cap is centered or the tire is going to be off balanced. I went to the hardware store and bought the skinniest nut i could find. I noticed that it butts right up against the rotor. If you do it right and becareful doing it it will work just fine. Mike thermal izod 07-27-2005, 08:22 PM thanks for the info...i was able to thread the hole, and it's a perfect fit... jbs80106 08-23-2005, 10:27 AM Hi! Hope this is still an active thread. I'm doing the same thing, got the center caps w/mounting screws but need to drill the rims. Do you recall what size hole/bit you used? Also, did you actually have to tap the threads into the hole or did the screws just tread in? Thanks! jbs80106@yahoo.com thermal izod 08-24-2005, 02:43 AM i can't recall the bit size...but i know u'll have to tap the treads in....it won't thread itself. thermal izod 09-03-2005, 07:57 PM To those who choose to replace hubs w/ center caps: We advised that when I did mine, the caps had rubbed off some paint on the rims, mostly around the outtermost edge of the rim, and some in the center, where the hubs' metal clips touched...This caused some rust a month or so later....I was able to bust it off w/ sandpaper, then use some GM black touch up paint to cover the naked area. I recommend to anyone who switches to center caps to check the rim for scratched, worn, or chipped pain and touch it up before a corrosion situation arises. Just a heads up, I was lucky enough to spot it early and remove the corrosion before it got bad....hope the same for everyone else... When I had first gotten my Impala, there was a lot of worn off paint on all four wheels, Mostly the outer-most exposed rib. I just sanded them down and hit them with a glossy rust-proofing paint. Been nice and clean looking ever since. thermal izod 09-04-2005, 10:49 PM exactly... MCO_Death 09-06-2005, 09:37 PM exactly...
