Retrieving Trouble codes on my 99 VentureAOneill 07-01-2005, 01:23 PM Hi there folks, just had my engine light go on today, fuel guage is reading full (incorrect) just happenned as well. AND the transmission is shifting hard...Having a pretty unlucky Canada Day Anyway can't seem to retrieve the codes. I have a little knowledge in GM codes with the shorting out the Diagnostic link but since the cover is missing can't seem to figure out the 2 terminals to cross, I tried the 2 side by side on the lower right hand side but it never worked. Is it the same as earlier gm products Thanks Andy DRW1000 07-01-2005, 03:20 PM A 99 is an OBD11 vehicle and you cannot enable them to "spit" out the codes. You need a code reader. They are fairly inexpensive, Canadian Tire has a decent one for $149. I have this model and it has paid for itself over and over again. The van is now basically accellerating on its own now, seems like its getting worse, weirdest symptom I've ever had Kevcules 07-01-2005, 10:47 PM I've got an older GMC truck that you could jump the terminals to go into diagnostic mode, but these vans need a code reader. I have a 98 Venture that gave me a check engine light yesterday so i think i will invest in the obd-2 reader. Good luck with yours. cdru 07-02-2005, 01:10 AM A 99 is an OBD11 vehicleIt's actually ODBII. The last 2 characters are "i", not 1. To the OP, many auto part stores will pull codes for you for free. Auto Zone and Advanced Auto both do around my parts. DRW1000 07-03-2005, 05:37 PM It's actually ODBII. The last 2 characters are "i", not 1. Actually it is II for the roman numeral equivalent of 2 so it is not really an "i" at all. It is in fact 2 Roman numeral 1's in succession. I think our friend lives in Canada. We don't have autozones or any other place that will read the codes for free unfortunately. Your right no autozones, I did how ever have my friend look at it with the snap-on scanner. We found the fuel sending unit to be the trouble... Sofar I have cleared the codes, drenched the tank with the fuel cleaner and filled it up, hopefully this works, sofar the engine light is on but the van is working better and sometimes the fuel guage will drop to empty hopefully telling me that the sending unit is reading SOMETHING and will maybe be cleaned enough to read properly and "Fix itself" anyway guys thanks for all the help and anyadvice on this code you can provide would be great or experiences with the fuel system. Your friend Andy DRW1000 07-04-2005, 06:19 PM I don't think the fuel sender will trigger your CEL so I think you still may have a problem besides the fuel sender and fuel gauge. Your right I also had map or maf (forgotalready) come up on the scanner, I'm going to pull both anyway, and clean all connections, hope it helps. DRW1000 07-05-2005, 08:52 AM DO you remember the raw number? There are normally at least 3 codes for every sensor (often more). But as a minumum there are usually a low sensor reading, a high sensor reading and a circuit malfunction (or words similar). If you have the malfunction then there is probable a wiring problem or the sensor is completely dead. If you have a low reading then perhaps your air filter needs replacement or your sensor is dirty and not reading properly. Just a couple of things to consider. Just hope the van will pull our little trailer Thanks again Andy AOneill 07-06-2005, 05:10 AM Thanks for the info..no I never got the raw number of the code. I came up with this for $199: http://www.pfyc.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GN6001&Category_Code=VTOTHER or this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBD-2-CHECK-ENGINE-SCANNER-ERROR-CODE-READER-OBDII-II_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43989QQitemZ46132676 73QQrdZ1 cdru 02-23-2006, 07:49 AM The autotap requires a computer. This could be a pro or a con. The other one i just a cheap reader. It probably reads the basic codes, but might not read manufacurer specific codes. Never used one that like that so I can't say. I personally own a Actron CP1945 (http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16150) (Amazon link (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00020BM2S/002-4407889-6971212?v=glance&n=15684181)). I have been very happy with it. Reads most makes/models, displayes not only the code, but the text description, as well as a variety of real-time operating parameters. I think I paid around $180 on eBay a little over a year ago. almostblue 02-24-2006, 01:47 PM thank you for the recommendation and the amazon link- now I don't have to spend all day researching it two clicks and now it is on the way thx The autotap requires a computer.
