86 toyota pickup, clutch swap, questionsjboatman333 06-30-2005, 10:28 PM So recently the clutch in my truck went out. I really can't afford to have it fixed by a pro and I don't really feel like my truck is worth as much as what it would cost. So I have decided to do it myself. I have a moderate amount of automotive knowlegde, but i definately have a few questions, and if worse comes to worse I can always call my mechanic friend and he will help me out. So to start off I am going to be working shadetree style, using ramps to raise my truck. I assume i need to pull the whole transmission. I figure if i can get it off putting it back on will be a little less difficult. 1st ? - Do i disconnect the drive shaft, if so how does it come apart? 2nd? - Do you think i will need any specialty tools that i might not have? 3rd? - Once i have unbolted the trans from the engine, and removed the tranny mounts, will there be anything else i need to remove in order to pull the tranny. 4th? - Once the tranny is free, and i plan on using a jack to lower it down, Should i watch out for pieces of the trans falling out or will it be pretty self contained. 5th? - Is there any type of lubrication needed for the clutch that has to filled once the new one is in. Any other tips of suggestion would be really appreciated. I have faith in myself to get this job done, I just need to ask a few questions and get some honest anwsers. I really don't wanna have to call my friend because he works on cars 40hrs. a week and i feel horrible when i have to ask him to make time for me when he is off. One more Question-Do you guys consider jack stand or the ramps to be more stable, I worry about the truck falling on me . Thanks a million, John from nashville ECVcrawltoy711 07-01-2005, 02:00 AM . 1st ? - Do i disconnect the drive shaft, if so how does it come apart? Austin8214 07-01-2005, 01:00 PM I just got a Chilton Manual, it says i need to drain all the engine coolant before i pull the tranny, is this neccasery? I do not see any reason to drain the coolant. you will also need a clutch alinement tool to aline the new clutch plate before you tighten down the pressure plate.
