I have a 1996 Nissan hardbody pickup with 88000 miles. Every time i go through a car wash, wash my engine, go through a mud puddle, or even drive it in a heavy rain it dies and has to wait 30-40 minutes before it will start again. I have taken it to a mechanic and it is reading a cam shaft sensor error. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with it?

first thing you need to do is replace your cam angle sensor. if that is showing it needs replaced, you should do it asap. however that wouldnt cause the water / no starting issue. that is most likly caused by water entering into your distributor cap. check your distributor cap for cracks, holes, etc. make sure the retaining screws are tight. also check your spark plug wires to make sure they are firmly seated. another way to check if unsure, is start your truck at night with no light under the hood and look to see if there are any sparks coming out of the cap or wires and grounding out on the engine metal. just a suggestion.

timmytim,

Good advise. I wonder why more people never heard of doing that night time in the darkness check for electrical problems. Works for defective spark plug wires too. The wires will glow in the dark even if there isn't an obvious short.
