Transmission Problem

Hi All,

The problem is with a 2000 Express Conversion van. 75000 miles 5.7 liter 350 and the 4L60 Trans. This is my old mans beast so I will try to explain the best I can. He came to pick me and my new wife up at Ohare airport in Chicago. We get back on the interstate on the way to Wisconsin when bam. No sound, no classic signs of transmission failure, nothing. :eek7:

We were not accelerating or anything just crusing at about 65 MPH. It has no gears at all D 3 2 1 or Reverse. Seems rather strange to me that it would just stop working all together usually you still have one or two gears for a few miles.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds like something electronic. Have you had the PCM checked out?

My understanding of the transmission (mine's a 4L80-E) is that the selector is what is putting the tranny in P,R,N or Drive, and that the electronics control the shifting through the gears while in Drive. If everything is gone, it sounds like a mechanical issue. Only time we had something like this (and it wasn't a major breakdown) was when an old Buick developed a leak on the tranny cooler line, and enough leaked out until the torque converter couldn't transmit power from the engine - it was in permanent neutral until we fixed the leak and added more fluid.

We had a ring that needed to be replaced in our van. We were pulling out in reverse from a small road and a bang sound came from under our van. The ring usually goes out when putting on some gas passing someone. We had 2nd gear no first and 3rd gear only. We were told we were lucky to even have that. All because of a flimsy looking ring. But we still have the same tranny and has over 260,000 miles on it.

Thanks for all the replies,

The problem was infact the transmission itself, basically self distructed while we were crusing down the road, no noise, no warning nothing.
So the tranny shop is a little richer, just bugs me because it only had 75k miles on it and my Burb has the same tranny and it is getting close to this mileage. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I own a 1999 Chevrolet express van now its 116000 miles but when was about 80000 miles its started to abruptly shif up from 1st to 2nd gear, it happens when after a long ride over 50mph or a fast acceleration (full) when go back to lower speed when accelerates it shift abruptly to the next gear either 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd and at the begining of the problem the "service engine soon" lamp went on and from them numerous times i made checked with the dealer an at diferent shops but the problem persist, in january I was on a long trip and in the way back I had the same problem it just blocked in 2nd and star humming and when I pull out of the road the radiator broke it was fixed and I drove for 400 miles back in my hometown I took it to the shop they replaced the torque converter and all the disc inside the transmission but after all because the torque converter was a rebuilt started to sliping again shifting from 1st to 2nd only when riding at lower revolutions if i speed up the problem seem disapear the codes that shows are 161 and 1870

I took to the shop again the problem wasn't fixed at all, although it works fine its start to slipping after a short trip in the highway, with speed over 50mph, when arrive to a reduce speed area like stop sign its start again shifting abruptly from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and when i speed up faster (i usually speed up very slowly trying to protect te gearbox) but when i speed up faster the abrupt shift seems to be softer and i think the computer show the same codes again, any help so far? thanks
