timing gear

my son just purchased a "93" hyundai excel ,they must have done some
work on it as the timing gear came off while he was driving it.now with the timing belt coming off will that bend the valves or rods,its a 1.5L engine,any help would be appreciated it his 1st car.

depends, is it an interference engine with a non-overhead cam?

sorry to be clueless but i don't know how to tell if it is or not.

I believe you will be okay. My buddy broke his timing belt on a Excel and "discovered" it to be a non-interference engine. Good Luck.

btw: it is Over Head Cam
