Had to replace the water pump yesterday on my 1995 Trans Sport with 3.8 engine and A/C. I have to say it was probably the easiest water pump I've ever had to change in any of the cars that I've owned. I called around and most shop estimates were around $195. I purchased a lifetime guaranteed pump from VATO ZONE for $24.95 and saved a bundle doing this myself. If any of you ever have to change your water pump, the Haynes Manual takes you through a couple of steps that you don't have to do. You won't have to remove the radiator hose from the pump housing, or disconnect your battery. While I had my pump out, I also installed a new serpentine drive belt. Anyone should be able to do this job on their own 3.8 with no problems.

The disconnecting of the battery is always put in there when you are working with anything in the engine compartment as a safty percaution. It's not there because it's required, but in case an accident is made somewhere along the line. For instance, many vehicles radiator fans can start spinning even when the vehicle is off. With it disconnected, you know that nothing is energized.

On my 98, it's not that hard to accidently touch the positive terminal with a socket when working on the end of the engine. I've done it in the past so I always disconnect the battery when ever I am working on anything on that side of the engine or near the fans.

I know what you are saying, however when you disconnnect the battery you have to re-set the clock and all of the radio station presets. My 1995 has the battery on the opposite side of where I was working and the fans are no where near the water pump. Disconnecting the battery for this job wasn't a concern. If you watch what you are doing, you shouldn't have to disconnect the battery. Also, on my 1995, there is a big plastic cover on the battery which makes it virtually impossible to touch the battery connections. Maybe it's different on your 1998 mini-van. But for the 1995 model year, you shouldn't have to disconnect the battery in order to change the water pump. If you feel the need to disconnect the battery whenever you are working in the engine compartment, that is up to you. However, I don't necessarily disconnnect it just because the manual says to.

security is everywhere now . I think it is done for amateur or to protect carelessly people. Cars manufacturers don't want lawsuit after an accident . And as we eared here , I don't know if it is true there are a lot of action for anything in US. It gegins to be the same here now So prevention first
