Well first off, I'd like to say hello to all. This is my first posting and its a gooder!! I have a 93 grand am that I bought from in the paper and it sounded like a good deal at the time... Now it started to overheat but only when idleing. once i started going again it would cool down again or id just turn the heat on full blast. Then one day it overheated in town then cooled off but then on the highway again and i got really hot maxed on the gauge then the car quit, it shut itself off and that was it. I can only guess the head gasket(s) is or are blown but am worried about the bottom end too. I was just wonderin what im getting into after i get the heads off. and of course what would cause it to over heat in the first place...and any clue if that would effect the check engine light because it would come on then shut off every now and then but I do smell gas after i start the car.

There are many things that will cause and engine to overheat, a stuck thermostat, low coolant, bad water pump, collapsed hoses, blocked radiator, non-working fans, bad head gaskets, no oil and etc.

Your worries are justified about the bottom end especially since the car shut itself off. If you are going to have to replace the head gaskets anyway, you might want to take the extra time to pull the engine and look at the bottom end. I would have to think that the oil probably overheated and you either turned it to sludge or it is so thin that it lost all its ability to lubricate. Once the engine is out you will be able to see what is going on with the bearings and if the engine is too bad you may be better off putting a different on in rather than spending big bucks on rebuilding this one. I hope I have answered your questions.
