Oil filter 2.2 Ecotek

Can't seem to find the oil filter. 4 cylinder 2.2 Eco tek.

The oil filter is only a cartridge on this motor. It is located below the power steering pump on the back (drivers side of engine bay) of the engine. There is a large black plastic cap that unscrews to get to the filter.

sorry guys i am not sure if i am doing this right so bare with me. i need my husband to change my oil and my filter in my 2004 malibu, he says he can't find out where or how to replace the oil filter .and it is past time for it to be done please let me have EASY STEPS so i can do this and not mess up my car it is my only way to get my autistic child around . sorry to sound so stupid but i am normally not fixing cars thanks everyone

I haven't done it yet myself. But, the first thing to do, is to buy the filter or at least to look at one. It doesn't look like a regular filter. It looks like the inside of a filter, there is no metal outer case. I was going to do it myself earlier, but I had a similiar situation. I needed to change the oil and couldn't find it.So, I just changed the oil. Next time, I will change the oil and filter. I am glad that someone posted an email to me telling me that the filter was a cartridge type earlier.

that is correct, the oil filter is actually a cartridge. while standing in front of the car with the hood open, look for what appears to be an over sized bolt. it should be black, you unscrew this cao and the oil filter is inside of there. be careful, this cap is made of plastic and it can be damaged easily. i have an 03 alero w/ the 2.2 ecotec. i had to remove the air filter box to get to it easily. when you do get the cap off, the oil filter will be attched to the cap. pull the old filter off, pop the new one in and reinstall the whole thing in tis original position, snuggly. good luck.

Thanks for your reply, it helped me out. I just thougth I would add this for anyone else. To get at the filter insert, I used a 1 1/4 in. 6 point socket to remove the plastice cap on the top of the filter insert. You can see the black cap standing at the front of the car to the drivers side: you will look down on it. I purchased the socket at Sears for about $5.50. I also got a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter so I could use my 3/8" ratchet set. It came out easily. It was actually easier for me to change because I didn't have to get under the car. I think Snap On makes a socket just for this purpose, but it might be a little pricey. Be careful not to over tighten when screwing the black plastic cap back on. Thanks, with the help of this forum I had an easy task working with this new engine. Thanks to all that replied.
