I have a 1999 pontiac grand am se and this morning I started my car and I have a very large knock in the engine. I checked the oil level and it hasn't lost any oil, BUT I CAN SMELL GASOLINE IN THE OIL BIGTIME, someone please help me, or can give me some advice on what to do Thank you

What size engine do you have in the car? If you have a V-6 you could have a leaking manifold gasket. Bad fuel injectors or a vacuum leak can also cause similar problems. If you have a 4 cylinder I would expect to see bad fuel injectors causing the fuel to be too rich and they are probably leaking down when the car is off causing the gas to get into the oil. This can also happen on the V-6. A partially blocked or totally blocked cat converter can cause fuel to back up into the system but you should notice a problem with the cars performance if this is the case.

If the engine is knocking I suspect the gas in the oil may have done damage to the bearings. This is common when gasoline dilutes the oil and causes the bearings to overheat. Unfortunately if that is the case the only way to correct the problem is to rebuild or replace the engine. Sorry for the bad news.

Hate to say it, but Like GTP says, the gas diluted the oil. There is a chance you can at least save a rebuild for awhile, if the internals aren't over-fried.

Find the source of the gas getting in, repair it, flush the engine with a good flush [engine flush, but follow directions], drain and refill the oil and filter, put in some CD-2 oil treatment.

Fair warn, it may help keep it going for awhile, but if a loud knock, there is bad damage already. I really don't think chasing down the gas drain and spending the $$$ for that fix [gas drain] will be worth the $$$ spent.

However, for at least a little more time to keep driving it until you decide what to do, the cheap "keep it running until I get the bucks up to do something serious about" approach is

1] Toss in a GOOD concentrated injector cleaner into the gas tank, it is somewhat possible it may free free up a sticking injector valve.

2] Get an oil and filter change right after #1.

3] Add a can of oil treatment, like CD-2, or BAR's to the oil after the change.

One last warn, these just temporoary methods to keep it going for a short while, and I wouldn't drive it any more than absolutely needed, as it could die on you in the middle of BFE, K?
