A 1/4 mile race between a stock 94 Grand Am GT with a 3100 with an automatic or a stock 92 Grand Am GT with the 2.3L quad 4 DOHC H.O. with the 5 speed. Just wondering i own both this cars and was just wanting to know which would win. My wife says the 94 but i think the 92 would take it.

The quad will take the v6 in the quarter mile no problem. My 95 stock ate a friend's 99 gt v6 in the quarter, and he only started catching up around 90 mph...

The 3.1 is a good engine, that's what the g/f has in hers, but a 2.4 HO will take it all day long. I think the major difference is in the tranny, the auto seems ranged for the steady cruise, while the 5-speed can better match the engine rpm's to speed needed.

Which leads to the following, is it more a transmission-ratio issue, or just a driver who is in tune with the ride and knows when to shift to keep the 2.4 in it's peak range? I tend to go with the fact of the manual and someone who knows how to to shift at the right time to keep the smaller plant in range.

2.4 litre especially since it is a 5 speed

the LGO will take the 3100 any day of the week, ive even beat stock and modded 3100s with my 2.4L twin cam with a 5speed. The LGO powered GAGT will run mid 15s and the 3100 might get you mid to low 16s

Interestingly, I have an '89 Eagle Premier with a 3.0 as a stand-by ride. Decided to run it, get the fluids moving good. It's a good runner, unusally low miles, 160K for a over 16 year old car.

Anyhoo, tooling around. At a light with a clear highway in front, no cars, no pedestrians, kinda remote. A GT 2.4 pulls up, fairly new, all tricked out, sharp looking ride, I must say. Didn't know what trans he had at first, but turned out to be a manual. Mine is a 3-speed lockup auto. [The Eagle's].

He has a rumbling exhaust, sounds itoff a few times, so I look over and he guns it a few times. Okay, call me very stupid, not something a 50 year guy should concern with, but this thread went through my thoughts.

Let's try a run. Roll down window, "At the Green light, let's run" Male menopause macho-shit, I know, I know. Get thumbs up.

Drop into first, he's revving the hell out of his, green light go [oh, btw, I reset my trip odometer to see how far we'd go before he or I got ahead within a 1/2 mile, I dumb but ain't stupid to push a car over 100 without really good reason for long]. Especially since the Eagle isn't a "ground-sticker".

We are off!!!!!!!!!! VROOM!!!!!!!!! His plant sounding like a banshee, smokes the front tires up, takes me off the line.

End of story, was with him in my estimate 4 seconds, pulled ahead within my estimate 8 seconds, at 1/2 mile [remember the trip odometer?], two lengths ahead. ME!!!!!!!!!

Stupid of me to do it, but ah well. Point is likely he would have had me in a 1/4 mile if he knew his shifting better, but the 2.4 peaks too early for a longer run to generate speed.

Anyway, thanks for indulging my little story. :smokin:

good story haha. I have a 2.3L 5 speed but its an SE. Ive toyed with some other boys on the Interstate but never had a chance to pull off the line. I might just do it by myself just to see. I live in hilly Western PA so its pretty tough to find a nice flat, straight piece of highway thats safe to come to a complete stop on to test it.

yea, those dodge 3.0L are pretty quick, i raced a buddy in his duster, we were pretty much even, although he had like 2 passangers in his car, so he probably owuld have taken me, but we did only race up to like 30-40mph

the only reason the 2.3 would win is cause they rap higher. the 3.3L V6, has the same HP as the 3.1 but raps to higher RPMs, it would eat the 2.3 like a dog eatin a stake. Trust me. seen it happen. funny when its a buick century beatin a grand am. can get the same motors in the 92 and 93 grand am.

Actually, Renault made the plant for the Eagle, strangest engineering I have ever seen, but the sucker hauls. :smokin:
