1996 Sc1 Head Gasket Change - Hlp Plzchikky 06-18-2005, 02:06 PM Hi all. I am in my garage with the car and I am stuck! My Girlfreind has a sturn SC1. Her engine overheated and we found oil in coolant overflow resevoir so we figued we had a problem with the head - maybe a gasket. So I bought a gasket set and have drained the oil and the coolant, and I have the valve cover off and the exhaust manifold off and the head bolts out but I still can't move the head. I can see that it's loose but i can't lift it up. I think it's because the timing chain and wheel are holding it down. Does anyone know how to relieve the block from the timing chain? Do I have to break the chain and re-link it? Do I loosen the wheel and slide the block out towards the drivers side? Do i have to take the side plate and all the pulleys off? Your suggestions much appreciated. sierrap615 06-18-2005, 02:37 PM you want to take the front cover off and remove the gears and chain. make sure you retime the chain correctly or engine damage will occur. also inspect the timing chain and guides closely as they tend to be one of the weaker components of the 1.9L engine. let me also warn you now that some of the mid-90s SOHC heads were poorly cast and quite a few of them have cracked in the past. if you have anymore trouble, i suggest looking at SATURNFANS.COM chikky 06-18-2005, 02:47 PM Thanks sierra, that seems like a major freekin job, especially with the engine in the car!!! If I get all this done how do you set the timing? you want to take the front cover off and remove the gears and chain. make sure you retime the chain correctly or engine damage will occur. also inspect the timing chain and guides closely as they tend to be one of the weaker components of the 1.9L engine. let me also warn you now that some of the mid-90s SOHC heads were poorly cast and quite a few of them have cracked in the past. if you have anymore trouble, i suggest looking at SATURNFANS.COM sierrap615 06-19-2005, 12:12 AM well, this photo is of the DOHC model, but i think the setup is simular, just only one cam gear not two. double check on saturnfans.com http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/15049/ vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
