My old 1985 G-30 engine

Power issues 350 (Post #1)

Changed all my gas lines a little while ago on my work van, and the 350 now runs like crap. I did a complete tune-up, even installed a new vacume advance. There's no power. It's in an old 85 C-30 with over 300,000 miles, which before ran great.

If I put my hand over the intake it seems to idle just fine, but with my hand off it sputters and shakes. Seems to be starving for gas. It's the reason I put in a new vacuum advance. To me, it doesn't seem to be advancing the dwell. Could a piece of rust or junk have gotten past the gas filter?

Is it time to rebuild the carb, or is it something else? I'm not familiar with the gizmo that replaced the points in the distributor. I'm guessing. Any help?

By the way all the emission junk was pulled long ago, and there's no vacuum leaks. My mind says rust got in the carb because of the line change.

Might be a vacuum leak. When you cover the air inlet it should run rich due to lack of sufficient air, but instead it runs better. That would point to it normally getting *too much* air. Check the vacuum lines (esp. the big one going to the brake booster). Check for leaks around the base of the carb too.

Rebuilt the carb last Saturday. Should have done it long ago. I now have more power, but it has a miss. When I bought the tune up parts the rotor was wrong, and went to another store.

I have always bought the same brand of cap and rotor, but this time, because I was in a hurry, bought the rotor somewhere else.

Is it not the rule of thumb to match up parts from the same manufacturer?

It's running as if it needs a tune up.

For ignition components I always go to NAPA auto parts (and for some reason I can't remember the name of their good electrical line of components). But quality is important here. As far as the miss goes, it's possible that you crossed a couple of cylinders when you put the wires back on. Double check the order on the distributor.

Iy mixed the fuel lines up it wouldn't run. Maybe the float level is set too low or the needles are not hooked up to the secondary air doors properly.

Did you ever get this resolved?
