Code 26-Overdrive and shifting problems 94 GCtinker1121 06-17-2005, 06:12 AM Having shifting problems with my 1994 GC at 84,000 miles. Actually started as soon as last summer but would only do it on occasion. No one could figure it out then and now does it more often and almost daily. Cottman says definitely "slipping" and wants $400 to "take the transmissio napart as nothing shows on the diagnostics." I thought that was too much if they can't give me an indication of what is wrong. Another garage recommended says he will not know until it does it for him, which it won't. The car seems to either start out in second gear on occasion in the morning or while driving, will not downshift at all or hestitate to shift while driving. Just noticed that the overdrive light will flicker. (Can't see that light during the day and noticed it while driving at dusk.) I get to where I am going, and then come out and it is fine. I will mention that the dealership did the recall on it a few years ago, the one for Jeeps slipping out of park and since then I think I may have a shifter problem. Sometimes it just feels like it is not in the right gear. Anyway, did the on off, on off, on with the iginition and the flashing on the overdrive light is a code "26." How bad is that and what type of bill can I expect? Our regular mechanic says to trade it in. Most recently (yesterday) loud squeal when putting it in reverse, shifter would not even move out of park later in the day and brakes feeling "squishy" when applying at a slow coast. dksob81 06-17-2005, 10:21 AM Code 26 - Governor Pressure Sensor Offset Drift. Thats your whole probelm. Not sure but a Tranny Flush might help the problem. GPS could be sticking. tinker1121 06-17-2005, 11:05 AM Flush it or just drain and change filter? (Read never to flush an older transmission as it can cause more problems.) Thanks! dksob81 06-17-2005, 11:36 PM Yes there are many problems and horror stories with flushing a transmission. But I think the CHEAPEST way at possibly clearing this problem is flushing it. Fluid and filter change might help a bit but won't really do anything if you have a sticking valve or solenoid. tinker1121 06-19-2005, 06:05 AM Thanks. Yesterday I got out the manual and it said that "the transmission will automatically shift into third gear and the OD light will flash to protect the transmission."!!!! "Can be reset by putting the car in park and then continuine to drive." That is exactly what it is happening. I usually only make short trips and that is why it seems intermitent and will be fine when I come back out of the mall, grocery store etc. I went to Auto Zone and asked them to check the fluid level while the car was heated up and running in neutral after the moving the shifter from P-D-N-2-1 and back to to 2-and keeping it in neutral. The fluid was a quart low!!! Three different garages checked the level in while it was running but in Park only with one guy telling me it had TOO MUCH fluid!!! Haven't driven much since adding and will be ecstatic if this was the problem. dksob81 06-19-2005, 09:54 AM that could have been the problem. having the correct fluid level in the transmission is very important and it can cause all kinds of driving problem. Let us know if that helped. tinker1121 06-28-2005, 06:59 AM It did not help. Seemed fine for about a week and then it started the weird shifting on Saturday. Darn!!! Time to trade her in? Hate to do it at only 84,000 but also can't understand why no one knows the answer or can correct it. We don't do the work ourselves and can get expensive having unnecesarry work done. Now the overdrive light does not blink out the 2 -6 code anymore. derkyb 07-20-2005, 11:49 PM im having similar problems with my tranny, check out my post, its too long to write again!! u figured out anything yet http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=433774&highlight=shifting tinker1121 07-21-2005, 06:58 AM dksob81 I had my transmission fluid changed and I didn't feel a change on the way home from the shop but now it has been fine for a week!!! I am thrilled but trying to trade it in while it is running ok, if I could find an honest dealership. I really do like my 94 GC,especially when I hear what the payments would be on a new one, and find the interior far superior to some the $29,000 new SUV's which are literally stripped. So far so good and that $105.00 transmission service may have done the trick but I still hold my breath during each "shift" when driving it. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
