Car was started from stop light on an incline and it seems like the something poped in the manual transmission. From that moment on, it was not possible to put car into gear.

What diagnostic can be done to determine root cause(s) of problem? How can it be determined if problem is with cluth, transmission, both
and/or other?

After AAA tow to garage, mechanic wants to install a junkyard transmission and then check if new clutch is needed.

I never had transmission problem before, so I don't understand differences between transmission repair, rebuilt transmission and junkyard transmission. I wonder if problem is realy with clutch rather than transmission.

Before transmission failure, car started making strange noise during acceleration but would subside as speed leveled off. I never paid any
attention to it until it was too late.

I am trying to determine how to fix it. What should I do first?
Any clues appreciated. Thanks in advance.
