96 Tracker air conditioning system

I'm trying to find out what kind of system my car has (R12 or R134a)

I bought a Haynes manual, but it doesnt say anything about A/C??? What the hell good is that book if it doesnt even have anything about that?

Can I look under the hood to find out?

My A/C has a pinhole leak from last year. The mechanic put in the flourescent dye but he said the leak was too small and he couldnt see where it was. So he put in new coolant, and it lasted about 6 months before running out.

so what I want to do is put in the coolant myself. But I can only do this if its a R134A system, because its against the law to buy the ozone-depleting R12 coolant.

so how do I find out what kind of A/C system my car has?

look at the fittings were you attach the hose to add freon , if its screw on then its R12 but if it is a quick connect fitting then its R134a , also there should be a tag under the hood the tells you what type it uses , i think it is going to be R134a

134 for sure! R12 systems went out over 15 years ago.

it would be 134 a all vehicles 94 and newer are 134 a
