service vehicle soon... no fog lamps or interior dash lights

So yesterday I decided would be a good day to put in a new stereo into my 04 grand am. I had it working well until I decided to put stuff it back into the dashboard and just as I was doing it, the stereo decided to die. After that I kept getting a steady service vehicle soon light with four quick chimes when I start the car. My fog lights and interior illumination on the dash do not work. I checked all my fuses and nothing is wrong there. What did I do? Should have just left the factory audio in it right?

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like a security issue. Try doing a security relearn - do the following:

1) Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.

2) Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is illuminated.

3) Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)

4) Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 11 minutes.
5) Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds.

6) Repeat #1 - #5 for 3 cycles.
On 4th attempt, car should start.

NOTE : Since this is a fairly long procedure, I would limit all electrical sources, such as disconnecting headlights, to prevent discharge of battery.

NOTE 2 : It is SAFE to wait LONGER than the allotted time, but it is not safe to wait less time. I.e. 12 minutes instead of 11 minutes should be safe; however, waiting 10 minutes instead of 11 minutes is not safe.

Properly executed, this procedure should take approximately 35 minutes to complete.

I failed to mention that the everything about the car is fine except those things. It starts, drives, and plays music with the factory stereo in it. Its just that those three things are blowing my mind. Thanks for the reply.

I had the same thing happen to me with an 88' Grand AM. The problem was the radio wireing harness was rubbing on a metal bracket and shorted out the system. I had to replacle the Light switch, dimmer switch (located in the dash) and the illumation relay, after finding the short. Hope this helps.

not exactly sure about your 2004 grand am but a very strong possiblity and almost a certianty, many new cars have a Class-2 data-bus. Which means that the computer of the car runs through the radio on to the next part in the data bus. If you remove the radio or anything else tied to the bus you break the chain, then anything after that point will not work. You may NEED a Data-bus Integration Module for your new radio.This will keep everything in order as if you never removed the radio.

Your GrandAm is just a little newer than my 93GT, so I don't know if this would apply, but your symptoms sound very similar to a problem I had when installing my stereo. I dropped a coin in the lighter socket and it shorted the soldered fuse in the chime module. The car would run fine, but it kept chiming, the radio would not work, the interior lights stayed on. I had to pull the courtesy fuse to keep the interior lights off. Picked up a chime module at the wrecker for $5 and fixed my problem.
