Starts then shuts down

I have a 99 grand am GT1. For the last month on an intermittent basis it will fire immediately then shut down as soon as you release the key. It will even do it when the remote start is used and the switch is bypassed. After it shuts down you can turn the key again and it will try again. If you keep trying it will eventually keep running. This doesn't always happen but has become more frequent over the last couple of weeks. There is no fault code generated as far as I know.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you might have a bad ignition switch.

Look for the security light. My guess its the Passlock system. Do a search on here, it is very common. The only fix is to replace the system

If your car leaks water inside, or has in the past, unhook the airbag module under the seat. Mine did the same thing and nobody could figure it out till this one guy had encountered it just days prior to looking at mine.

the airbag has nothing to do with the ignition or pk2 system

I understand that, but it happened to me. I was told it was evertything else...I even nearly had to buy a whole new ignition with keys for nearly $200 from the dealer. This guy had encountered it before, unplugged the airbag and nothing else. It still has no problems to this day. I'm just passing it on. If there has been water inside the car, it cannot hurt to try something so simple.

ANY PROBS. WITH THE AIR BAG SYSTEM SHOULD GENERATE A CODE AS WELL AS WITH THE IGNITION...I WOULD DEFINETLY SCAN THE ECU PROFESSIONALY NOT JUST RELY ON THE CHECK ENGINE BEING ON.(I NOTICED IN THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINT IT WAS SAID "NO CODES WERE SHOWN **I THINK**..."""
DOESN'T SOUND LIKE IT WAS ACTUALLY SCANNED..
IF HOWEVER THERE IS ACTUALLY NO CODES THE IGNITION SWITCH/TUMBLER WOULD LIKELY BE AT FAULT..
ALSO AIR BAGS ARE THERE TO SAVE YOUR A
DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNHOOKED!!!!!
GOOD LUCK AND LET'S REMEMBER ALL ADVICE SHOULD AT LEAST BE CONSIDERED AND APPRECIATED..

My 99 does the same thing. I put my foot on the gas and move it just a bit and it stays running. Does yours do that as well, if you touch the gas?

I am sorry, I failed to mention my air bag light had been on for years already. I do have one to replace it, but have a million other things between both our cars to fix yet. I am for safety 100%.

Now if the original person who made this post has had the airbag light on, and has had water inside the car, it is a possibility. Just wanna help cause it is an odd thing that could make someone potentially spend alot of money on parts they don't need. If they unhook the airbag and it fixes it, the car runs, and they should fix the airbag module soon as possible.

No, mine flat out died....gas pedal or no gas pedal.

An airbag fault could disable the ignition / fuel supply. If the airbag module "thinks" that the car got in a collision, it will activate the fuel shutoff, which would explain not starting.

Thanks for explaining why. I never completely understood. I figured it was a short or something.

Like Ride says^^^^^^^^ Valid thought.

That WOULD make sense but he stated it fires then stalls out which is the common PK2 fault. All they have to do is watch the "security" light to flash while starting or come on solid when driving. It's so common that I have G-am owners sign a release if I install a remote start.

Check to see if your ignition has been replaced under the recall too.
