security or not?

I recently bought a 99 grandam se 3.4. I don't know if this car came with a security system or not but here is my question and maybe its a stupid one but. I can lock my doors and go in someplace, but within a few steps away from the car, after i have locked the doors, the horn will will sound one short sound? I first thought it was my imagination but several times I have gone to Wal-Mart late, like 3am and ofcourse I am the only one in the parking lot. It is most certainly my car. Is this something that is just built in and what is its purpose.? I also have a 95 grandam se sedan, and by the way the 99 is a coupe. The 95 doesn't make this sound. Any help would be great.

It's common with that generation GA (mine does the same thing). Whether or not you have factory keyless, AFAIK those cars don't come with factory alarm systems, or at least not fully-funtional ones. They don't monitor door pins and ignition, although they do have the Passlock II security built in which will disable the fuel system in the vehicle without a key physically present. The horn honk is essentially a "fake-out" to potentially warn away thieves that are floating around.

Welcome to the forum.

'99-up GA's have delayed door locking. Ever notice how when you hit the lock button with any door open the doors don't lock and you hear 3 chimes? If you hit the lock button one more time with a door open it overides the delayed lock-up. This is so you have a chance to open the door again after remembering that your keys were left in the ignition, etc.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Open a door and hit the lock button once, this will activate the delayed door locking. After the last open door (yes, it monitors all four doors on the sedans and both doors on the coupes) is closed the countdown begins. There is a 7 sec. delay before the doors will automatically lock, when they lock the horn honks once. If within that 7 sec. you forgot something in the car and reopen a door the locking cycle will be paused until the last door is closed again. You will then have another 7 sec. to reopen a door before the system lock them again.

This is a convenience feature, not a security system. With the delay, if you remember quick enough you can get back into the vehicle before the doors lock, or you close the driver door after hitting the lock button and open the back door to grab your jacket without having to worry about relocking the doors, etc.

The door lock system is outlined in the car's owner's manual. It also tells you how to change the way the door's will lock/unlock when you drive the car and if you want the horn to honk or not when the delayed door locking lock's the doors. You can make the doors lock when you shift out of park, you can make the doors unlock or not when you put the car back in park or when you turn the ignition on or off, etc.

For my wifes safety I have them setup so the doors lock when put into drive and unlock only when the ignition gets turned off, not when the car is simply put into park. She works nights so it's nice to know if she's parked somewhere for a minute, the doors don't become unlocked without her knowing about it, just piece of mind I guess.

Hey I appreciate the info and the breakdown. I got another one for you. If I wanted to put an alarm system such as the type that would be on it from the factory, is there any of the wiring already existing such as designated fuse space. I don't want to spend more than I paid for the car...but for the 95 I installed the bulldog, just simple and not very accurate most times. Any suggestions on this?
