Gas Gauge Reading

I have a 2002 Malibu LS with 55, 000 miles. Recently I noticed that the gas gauge has not been reflecting a true reading. It stays at the full mark even when I have driven more than 150 miles. At this present time I have driven 212 miles since the last fill up, but the tank is registering 3/4 full. It should at least register a half a tank or slighly below. I typically get 275 -280 miles on a tank of gas in the city and 300-325 miles a tank on the highway. I would typically think that if the gauge was not working, that it would register empty and not full. Its working the opposite. If I shut off the ignition the gauge drops to empty as to the other gauges, but the minute the key is turned on, the gauge goes back to reflecting full. Any thoughts on what is going on? Is there a sensor that may be going bad?

Search the threads. I just had this problem, my fuel gauge stayed at full and would occasionally wander doen to 3/4 mark then back up to full. The fuel level sending unit shorted out inside the fuel tank. Took it to the dealer had it fixed under warranty. Mine did it at 63,000 miles.

Exactly. Had the same problem except when I got to about a little above 1/4 tank, it would shoot up to full. It is your fuel sending unit and it is inthe fuel tank connected to the fuel pump. It needs a new sending unit.

You dropped the tank and took out the combo sending unit/fuel pump to clean the guage?
