i just got a 1990 cherokee laredo and i was trying to see how the 4wd worked, like how to put it in and take it out of 4wd. so i put it into 4wd just fine and it worked. then i tried to put it back into 2wd and it wouldnt go back, it still said "part time". i have no idea how to get it back into 2wd. i tried every combo of gears and trying to put it back into 4wd and it didnt grind or make any wierd noises. i dont know what to do. please help

I too have a 90 Cherokee and had problems with it getting out of 4wd it kept getting stuck in part time and was a REAL PITA (Pain In TheA$$) come to find out i had swapped the spare on after a blow out and it was a different diameter ...... made it ALMOST impossible to shift out of 4wd....the only way i could get it to do it was to cycle thru all lvls of 4wd including 4lo and then back to 2 hi and reversing hard.....

thanx for the help, i just messed around with it by going through all of the gears and it just came out of 4wd. thanx for the help

The 90 Xj does yours have vacuum lines going to the front axle on the PS side? If so, you could either have a vacuum switch that is sticking, or the actuator onthe front axle going bad.The vacuum switch is located on the back DS of the T-case, has 4-5 vacuum lines going to it. If its bad, just simply unscrew it and see if the plunger ball in the bottom is sticking.
