Uh oh......valve?

Damn....I was getting a rapping noise when I would get on the throttle from an idle, looked like it was the tensioner because every time the noise happened the tensioner would hop like crazy and that seemed to be the area where the noise was being created (plus when I changed my belt a couple of months ago the tensioner pulley bearing was pretty worn and so was the spring). I just changed the tensioner with a new one only to discover the noise is still there, not as bad mind you (I obviously needed a new tensioner anyway so I'm not out any money). I fear this may be created by one of the valves on #1 now. Any thoughts or suggestions? '01 GA SE DOHC by the way.

Thanks
Marc

There are so many things it could be you need to try to locate the noise to a more specific location. If it is a valve noise it could be caused by a broken spring, bent valve stem or a burnt seat. I would also be checking to insure that the noise isn't coming from a rod bearing. A knock usually indicates a rod bearing is going bad or has already spun in the journal. You may want to get a mechanics stethoscope or use the long screwdriver method to try to narrow down the noise.

By the way it could also be a water pump, alternator or AC compressor making the noise. Good Luck in tracking it down!
