A/C compressor leak 96 Dodge Grand CaravanByndor 05-31-2005, 12:24 PM Hi, any and all help greatly appreciated! My A/C system had signs of loosing refridgerant (134A) last fall. Eventually the leak went from slow to fast, to the point the system would leak all refridgerant in a day. This spring we added dye and found the leak to be the compressor. To save money we don't have we bought a rebuilt compressor and had it replaced by a friend whom used to be a mechanic. After just one week it seams to be doing the same thing. The compressor seems to be leaking in a seam on the body of the compressor (this is what my husband says) and from the valve stem on the low pressure side. Any idea what could be causing this? Your help would be greatly appreciated, I need to get this fixed we are planning a much needed vacation to visit my brother in the Military in just 3 weeks and I can't afford both a vacation and a costly repair and can't travel to Georgia in June without air. P.S. This is a 1996 Dodge grand caravan 2.4L without rear air. GTP Dad 05-31-2005, 07:07 PM Take the car to an AC specialist and have them diagnose the problem. It could be that the used compressor was bad. You should also have a vacuum pulled on the system to insure that all air is out and that there are no other leaks. One thing too is that there is oil in the system, if it leaked out and was not replaced the new compressor could have destroyed itself. If you need a major repair, you can buy another used compressor and have it put on just have someone just put a vacuum on it before spending a lot of money to refill the system again. A Byndor 06-01-2005, 05:37 PM We also noticed now that it is leaking from the low pressure side service port (valve stem? not sure if this is what it is called in the a/c system) also. Is there anything that could cause both the compressor and the low pressure service port to leak, I am wondering if this is a pressure related problem? We added a can of stop leak last night as a last hope before it goes in for service and the pressure looked was fine maybe a tad low on the gauges but the air was at 36 degrees, though it was 65 out I new it would be colder than it would in the heat of the day. Though now the air won't drop below 60. The system takes 34 oz and we initially could only fit in 24 the first day but just added another 12 last night. Any expertise is appreciated, really appreciated! Thanks! GTP Dad 06-01-2005, 07:36 PM Be careful not to overfill the system. Too much pressure and too much refrigerant will cause the system to operate poorly. If you have a fill guage that gives you pressure readings that is the best way to service it. However, if you put in 24 oz on a 34 oz system then you still have a slow leak somewhere. Check for oily areas around all fittings and at the front of the condensor located in front of the radiator. Overfilling the system can cause a leak from the fitting and the compressor. The leak from the low pressure side valve may be a bad valve that will need to be removed from the system and replaced. Have this done by a service person don't try to replace it yourself. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
