Have any of you guys ever heard of the Valiant Charger (E38/E49) and what do you think of it? Built by Chrysler Australia. They came out with 265 Hemi 6-pack, 3 double throated carbies, and will comfortably beat most hot V8's over the standing quarter-mile. The Charger E49 is acknowledged as the fastest-accelerating production car built in Australia.

I own an RT E38 which is one of two of the best australian charges the other being the E49 which has a 4 speed instead of a three speed. My charger is way past E49 specs the head was origionally of a sprint car its running 13.5 compresion, has custom extra head studs (for the high comp), triple valve springs, adjustable roller rockers, the bigest valves that can be fitted and a hell of a lot of porting. the botom end has keath black flat top pistons, power detroit rods, solid crank, solid cam, high vol oil pump, straight cut timing gears, cain inlet manifold, a u.s carter 4 barel and a custom electronic dissy.its so fast i put a split in the chassie which i am repairing at the moment. This thing is regulary reved to 9 grand and once i over reved it of the taco im guessing about 10 - 11 grand maby higher and it loved it.

I got this info from a site and it is not my words but will give you an idea on how good these cars were in there time and still are today.

All you have heard about the incredible Chrysler Charger R/T E49 is true. At the time of E49s release, it's 302hp treble Weber 6 Pack Hemi was the most powerful production 6-cylinder engine in the world. A little known factory option was a Bathurst cam, which upped the power to a rather healthy 325hp! The 265 Hemi 6 Pack engines also have a magnificent spine tingling howl all of their own.

Wheels magazines 1972 road test of the E49 recorded 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds, 0-100mph in 14.1 seconds, standing quarter in 14.4 seconds, top speed 132mph. This made the E49 the fastest accelerating production car in Australia and the fastest accelerating production 6-cylinder car in the world. Not bad for a 25 year old stock standard 6-cylinder Valiant! Today with modern tires, NZ E49s have easily broken the 14-second barrier through the quarter and with higher gearing, NZ E49s have been timed at over 150mph.

Wheels (1972) said of the E49: ìWhere the Charger is absolutely unbeatable is in winding mountain country. We don't mean tight hairpin bends, though it is still horribly quick through these, but on fast open sweepers and meandering switchbacks. The raw quivering power is instantaneously on tap and with a ratio for every conceivable situation the Charger just storms through and it would take a Ferrari Daytona with Jackie Ickx behind the wheel to stay with one.
This is not my car but mine looks exactly like this even the colour and rims.

There was a Hemi 6 Cyl.? Why wasnt it in the US? THat would have been a good engine for a Chrysler during the 80's to compete with the Buick Grand National (GNX). The GNX had a high-output Inline 6. Now there should be a Hemi V6 available for any Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles.

I know this is off the point, but still. A HEMI 6 CYLINDER!!!

It actually was originally a US designed concept for a truck and the US dumped it, Au (Australia) took it on and redesigned it making lots of mods, it was a straight 6, they are the most powerfull hemi beating all the v8s in AU 318,340,360,440 just to name a few. All of the carbs were sent to Germany for tuning cos they were the best at the time with the webbers. chrysler AU was a completely independant company but unfortunantly chrysler AU was bought out by mitsubishi in the mid 80s and is no more. I dont like mitsubishis for this reason but still do buisness with them cos they still stock parts for valiant chryslers and they do have some good cars too. RT chargers are very rare and expensive, most of them were written off or damaged beyond repair because 90% of them were raced.

There also was a E55 charger with a hemi v8 340ci but was no were as quick as the E38 & 49 or as good looking it didnt have the flashy decals and stripes and the interor was very bland the only hint it was any difrent from the standerd chargers was the factory mags. The E55 only pulled a 15 somthing 1/4( i think), but had a lot of torque the cops used them as interceptors but they and the public kept killing them selves in them so the chargers were baned and considered to powerfull. This didnt happen with the E38 & 49 cos there wasnt many on the road they were mostly a race car but were sold to the public as well.

This is a pic of a E55 but from factory there is no carbies protuding from the bonnet.

Allpar has a rather large section on Aussie and NZ cars, including the VH Chargers. You might want to check them out.
