O-ring seals on oil-filter assemblyCarlson327 05-27-2005, 10:57 PM '92 XJ leaking oil out of the oil-filter doo-hickey thing-a-ma-bob that bolts to the engine block and holds the filter. Cannot seem to find replacement seals. Dealer has from '93 on, and the discount stores don't have them either. Ideas? Carlson Saudade 05-28-2005, 01:37 AM Yeah, keep looking. I went to 4 different auto parts places before I found ones to fit. Check your local home centers too. Carlson327 06-01-2005, 09:26 PM All right...just a quick follow up on this topic. Found the three O-rings. I misunderstood the dealer. For some reason, he thought the three O-rings (in a kit) would be okay for the '92, but they don't. For '91 & '92, you have to buy them all separately. Replaced them all, and to date, no more oil leak. The old ones were crispy! Saudade 06-02-2005, 01:13 AM Thanks for the followup. Glad it worked for you. It was a Sunday when I took mine off so the dealer wasn't an option. I spent more time tracking down the parts than it took to change them. brainyass 06-19-2005, 03:39 PM Hey, my '93 Cherokee is doing the same thing. What size o-rings did you buy and where? What did you use to take off the thinga-ma-bob. It looks like a giant kinda hex bolt. I am in the military, stationed in Germany, so any info would be greatly appreciated. Carlson327 06-20-2005, 10:44 PM Hey, brainy, as far as the O-rings, you'll have to go to the dealer. Do they have Jeep dealers there? Daimler-Chrysler, so they should, right? I tried the usual discount auto parts stores, but they all gave me the 'ol, "nope, not on my system" routine. For the bolt pattern, I don't know for the '93. I used a regular wrench on my '92. Saudade 06-22-2005, 10:25 AM Most auto parts stores carry a variety of o-rings in standard sizes (metric and imperial). They're just not cross referenced to Jeep pn's. I took the old pieces of o-ring and the parts and fitted the new ones. It took a bit of hunting to get them all but I did manage to find them. Cost was a few dollars and I had them that day. swilt 06-24-2005, 09:34 AM That hex bolt is a 9/16". I finally found a 9/16" hex key at a tool wholesaler. Can't find one at a hardware store or auto parts store. The hex key just barely leaves enough room between the filter mount and the inner fender to loosen it. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
