99 Dodge Tranny 1st to 2nd overshiftturnaround 05-25-2005, 05:41 PM Hi, My 99 dodge 1500 (5.9L) PU has recently started having some shift problems. I don't know if it's the original tranny or not and it has 158k on it !!! It seems better when the truck is cold, but once it heats up, it won't shift into 2nd until RPMs are above 3500 and let off the gas. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th are perfectly fine. I've looked through the archives and it seems common to be a speed output sensor. I've called 5 different parts stores and no one seems to carry that part for 99 (they have a 98 and a 2000, but no 99). Does it go by a different name? I'm open to other suggestions as well if you have had this problem and have other recommendations. Thanks tallyram 05-26-2005, 07:48 AM i have 2000 5.9 and had dealer flash my comp, made big shift improvement. been driving it 5.5 years with it not holding 3rd properly, its a whole lot better now. as for your part, couldn't tell you. sorry. fredjacksonsan 05-26-2005, 11:39 AM I had an auto trans that didn't want to shift into 2nd (not Dodge but same concept). Since the 1-2 and 2-1 shift get the most work in an auto, it gets the most wear. For mine, it was a worn spring in the valve body; once I put a shift kit in it, it worked fine until I sold it 50K miles later. A good cleaning of the valve body, new filter and fresh fluid will go a long way. 2000mudder 05-26-2005, 01:05 PM there are spring loaded plungers in the tranny that relaese with pressure built up fron pump and let it shift and could be sticking or leaking or your pump is going bad. thats where a shift kit works sometimes. it increases pump pressure. fredjacksonsan 05-26-2005, 01:08 PM My case was a weak spring that wasn't putting the check ball where it needed to go... turnaround 06-02-2005, 11:56 AM Update for anyone that it might help.......It turned out to be the tranny in general. The valve body appears to be salvageable, but the bands were shot and it needed all new sensors, so if your having this same problem, hopefully you'll be luckier. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
