97 Camaro Drive Shaft Problem/Question

I have a problem with my 97 Camaro. It appears that I have a two piece drive shaft with a carrier bearing in the middle. Even the dealer was a little surprised when they looked up the part. They didn't realize this car has a two piece drive shaft. Anyway, it sounds like the carrier bearing is going bad, so I wanted it replaced. When the parts guy looked it up, it said that it was/is a NON-SERVICABLE part, so you need to buy the entire assembly for a cool $880!!. I told them it wasn't bad enough for me to spend that kind of money. I can see Ford doing something stupid like this but I didn't think GM would put a bearing in the middle of the drive shaft and not have it be replacable. After talking it over with the parts manager, he didn't see why I couldn't replace the entire assembly with used single piece drive shaft. My question is has anyone out there ever heard of this problem and tried this solution?

Thanks in advance for your help.
