I have a 97 aurora and i purchased it used..however I have a coolant leak when driving only..coolant gets low and when i look under the hood there is colant everywhere on drivers side..like something leaks only when driving...I looked at the reservoir and noticed that a secon hose could go there but it is blocked off.

After doing some reading and looking at pictures of engines in the aurora I have found that the 95 and 96 only have the second hose because it goes the the tranny cooler on the radiator.

I believe my coolabt leak is from that blocked off hose (maybe it is not tightly blocked off enough and when presure builds it streams out).

i believe a previous owner purchased a reservoir off the wrong year car and could not use the extra hose and blocked it off.

on another note if this does not fix my problem is there a how-to on changing the thermostat?

and my raidiator fan seems to never kick in..( i wired it and the motor works on the fan) need a relay??? is there a how-to? thanks

:2cents:Try checking the cooling fan sensor...
You may have answered your own ? on the Hose issue. :nono:Do not let the car overheat. If it runs in the RED your done! So if your on the road
(and a mile or two from help) and it starts to clime up into the red, turn car off~but not to the point where the steering wheel locks up. Now let it coast as far as you can (neutral) pull over where safe as you come to a complete STOP. Now, Start car again, and get going back up to the speed limit and shut car off (again) and coast to the nearest help.
By doing this routine, you save the cars engine. Should you drive those few miles continously the car would overheat and your engine would be toast!

Hate to disagree but the Northstar engines are designed to run up to 50 miles, at 55mph if I remember the speed correctly, with ZERO coolent in the engine. The engine WILL run hotter then normal and you WILL have to change the oil because of the heat but as long as the engine goes into its LIMP HOME mode no damage will occure. In the LIMP HOME mode the 8 cylinders will alternate firing. On one stroke clyinders 1,3,5,7 will fire and on the next stoke 2,4,6,8 will fire. On the strokes that they do not fire the cylinders will suck cool air in on the intake stroke and blow the hot air out on the exhaust stoke basicly turning into a air cooled motor. I read in a magazine when the Caddies first got the Northstars that the only thing that limits the motor to 50 miles in Limp Home mode is the oil quickly degrading with the higher then normal temps but Ive never read it anywhere else since then.

Thanks for replying...I don't let it get into the red....the thing is if i drive below 70 it will stay around 200 but as soon as i go 70-80 is starts to climb up and will continue to climb up if i don't go back down below 70.

when i return to 70 it gradually gets back down to 200. and this never fails I drove home (to my mom's) this past weekend for 270 miles straight no over heating problems as long as i stayed below 70 or at 70

on the way back i tried to get it to go 80 but she started to over heat and then the low coolant message came on i pulled over and looked under the hood and coolant was all around even on the top of the hood like it was spraying from somewhere. we wired the fan so it was on (it wouldn't come on before-even when the temp was near the red) so we thought that was the only problem..however the problem continues.

there is no water in the oil..engine sounds and drives great.

just coolant sprewing from somewhere for some reason.

I am going to my local yard and get the correct coolant jug..then i may flush the raidiator and clean the fins..then i may install a thermostat...

let me know of any thoughts or suggestions.

thanks

Have the cooling fan switch checked. Also, The radiator may be the culprit, & change the thermostat as well if you get another radiator. Do a pressure check on the radiator. (check rad cap):smokin:
