I have a 1997 Tahoe 5.7L Vortec , and my husband installed a new fuel pump but when we went to start it, it would only run for maybe 2 seconds then quit. Even giving it gas did nothing for it. When my husband sprayed ether in something under the hood(I have no idea what) it would try to run but it kept coming to life then dying. He checked the fuel filter-he blowed through it so he thought the gas should have no trouble getting through it also- he could of been joking with me on that part! But does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? :banghead:

Also does anyone know what type of engine this mine is-is it a throttle body or a CSFI or what? Thanks!

my 2002 has a throttle body. should be able to follow it from the air filter towards the engine.

very well could be the throttle or idle air control. also, make sure you put in a new relay (~$20) for the fuel pump.

See if your getting pressure to the manifold.
1. Turn ignition key, but don't start the engine...just enough to hit accessories, you should here buzzing under back seat drivers side. That's the pump....
2. There's a shraeder valve (like a large bike tire valve) in the incoming fuel line (metal tubing) just before it hits the manifold (has black cap on it). Press it with a flat screw driver or something (be ready for 60+psi of fuel squirt)....or you can get a fuel pressure guage (no mess).
No pressure, or low pressure = bad pump or bad electrical connection to pump...or possibly relay if you didn't hear the "buzz".

There's another thread on here about bad connectors on the fuel pump.

That's about all I have, got my own "gremlins" to work out too with recently replaced fuel pump. ack...

Best of luck! Let us know what the end result is...
(Trade-in isn't an acceptable answer, heh....joking)

By any chance could the fuel filter be installed backwards with the flow in the wrong direction. Also I don't know if blowing high pressure air is very good for the filter.
