When do you change the timing belt on a 1997 venture??

Never. The 97 Venture has a timing chain which should last longer than the engine. If the engine has high mileage and is undergoing a major teardown for some other reason (e.g. valves, pistons, rings, etc.) you should replace the sprockets and chain at that time. Otherwise, the chain and sprockets are replaced if they wear out and jump a link. If that happens, you will know.

Thank you AJT1961, am getting ready to go on a long vacation and wanted to get my van in top condition. A friend suggested I change the timing belt (115,000 miles) and it seemed like a good idea. A chain makes it alot easier, thanks again!!!

Enjoy your vacation. Don't worry about the chain. Our vans have enough things that go wrong with them on a regular basis, but the timing chain isn't one of them.

This goes without saying but ensure that all of the fluids are fresh and topped up. It may not be a bad time to change your coolant, oil and filters, PCV valve and maybe spark plugs if they are due.
In other words make sure all of the maintenance items are done and up to date.

Enjoy the trip

Ha! Ha! Good one!!

Be sure to check your tire pressure as well. 35 lbs I believe. With the price of fuel , you want the best mileage you can get!!
