99 f150 4x4 drive shaft noise kles150 05-11-2005, 11:14 PM
I have a 99 f150 4x4 with a manual transmission and it has been making a clunking noise when shifting especially from 2nd to 3rd. I thought it was probably a bad universal joint. When I checked the drive shaft there was no play in the universals but there was freeplay in the shaft from the transfer case or transmission. The truck was not in gear at the time. My question is; Is this normal freeplay or has something worn in the transfer case or tranny that is allowing the freeplay? The truck only has 73000 miles on it. Thanks for the help... jerutah 05-17-2005, 03:34 PM I have a 99 f150 that I just fixed that had a clunking noise when ever I started from a stop or just as I was stopping. I have the auto tranny. Anywho, my problem was loose u bolt nuts for the rear axle. Make sure those are tight. Hope this helps. Related Links Enter the largest automotive community on the planet! |
