engine on 10 minute break.douge36 05-02-2005, 02:23 PM I have a 1994 Jeep G/C with the 5.2 L. and I just purchased this auto about 4 months ago. The very first day I was on an errand and ran low on gas so I stopped to fill up. I got in, the thing would not start. It had power and everything but would not start. Called tow truck, got it to shop and it started right up. Another errand, stopped did my thing came out, turned over the engine and all it did was chug for a few secondss and died. Tried it again, same thing. Went to payphone, called home for a ride, went back to Jeep, tried one more time, fired right up. Next time, went to park, same thing. Went to start Jeep, started, chugged and died. Waited about 15-20 minutes before I tried it again and it started right up. Yesterday, went to Seattle, parked car to go get a bite to eat at Mcie D's and went back started Jeep, chugged. This time I put my foot on the gas thinking I could get it to catch we then had a 5 hour wait for this thing to start. I would crank the engine and there was nothing. Like there was no gas. I have a gas can in the back. I poored a few drops down the throttle body, it started and died. That which tells me I have a fuel problem. I don't know where the problem would lie. When I crank the engine and it starts and chugs it has this awful odor that comes from it. It's not exactly sulfer smelling, it's a burnt fuel sort of smell though. It's extremely heavy in the air when this happens. Could it be flooding? I don't put my foot on the gas to start. Could the pump be shutting down? Could it be an engine heat problem? I have never overheated. It stays about 180'-200' Fuel filter? I'll replace it today and see if it helps. I thought maybe if there was sediment it might be sucking it up and then disapating as it sets. It just kills me that I thought I bought a reliable rig and I can't even go on the vacation I was looking fwd to. BLAZT 05-02-2005, 05:55 PM I had a similar problem just a couple of weeks ago. I was driving my jeep when it shut off by itself. Had the tow truck take it to my house. The jeep would crank but it would not start. So I put some starting spray in the throttle and it started but then it died once more. Hit the back of the gas tank while my dad started the engine and it was working fine, but soon after that the engine died again. It was a bad fuel pump. I had that changed with the fuel filter. With parts and labor it came around $275.00. And yeah I also smelled that strong odor that was coming from my jeep. It could be your fuel pump. So try hitting the gas tank with a Rubber hammer and someone else in the front at the ignition. Could be the fuel pump that has gotten stuck. Good Luck douge36 05-02-2005, 06:17 PM I wonder if I could put on an aftermarket in-line fuel pump and make it work. I have priced those fuel pumps, they're not cheap. Ron68 05-05-2005, 01:25 AM You can get one at Pep Boys for $105. I just replaced the pump in my 97, although I am not sure if the 94 fuel pump module is the same. I think the pump and filter are external of the tank. In 97, everything is inside the tank. I am in Mukilteo, where are you? adgoitd 05-08-2005, 01:25 AM it's not the fuel pump, does your check engine light come on as soon as your turn the key to on position? I had the same problem as you described, i changed the PCM/ECM COMPUTER and problem solved, if the check engine light does not come on, your computer could be shot douge36 05-09-2005, 04:35 AM it's not the fuel pump, does your check engine light come on as soon as your turn the key to on position? I had the same problem as you described, i changed the PCM/ECM COMPUTER and problem solved, if the check engine light does not come on, your computer could be shot I have never seen my check engine light come on at all. adgoitd 05-09-2005, 06:26 PM when the fuel pump is the cause, the car could not start again, even you're able to start it since it is going bad, first, it begins to make hesitation all over the engine, shuddering, vibration.. and finally you won't be able to start the engine when it dies, but the car never shutdowns due to a bad fuel pump, because it's an electrical feeding problem, not a gas problem besides when you are running out of gas (similar of a faulty fuel pump) your jeep begins to decrease the speed until it shuts down, it does not shut down the engine inmediately. douge, probably sometime you tried to start the jeep and have to crank the engine several times to see your check engine light on (normal condition) and the car fires up, well, the problem is not fuel neither spark, you have a bad computer because everytime you have to see the check engine light in your dashboard when you turn the key to ON pos, no matter the weather or temperature on the car whatsoever, the computer is not as expensive as it seems, you can get one at 230-290 dollars and install it by yourself Dale Aeppli 05-10-2005, 09:46 AM I have never seen my check engine light come on at all. Have you checked to see if you have fuel and spark Dale jeepman600@sbcglobal.net :lol2: adgoitd 05-10-2005, 08:13 PM the problem with the check engine light failure gives problem of inconsistency on starting the car, and it has nothing to do with the fuel or spark, both of them are all right but the computer is not controling them at time, remember COMPUTER CONTROLS TIMING AND FUEL DELIVERY vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
