well we thought we had solved it by disconnecting those relays in the back of the van where the inflator is but NOPE. It still dies, although now it doesn't die completely, there is still some juice to ring the bell and operate a few things while the van is off, but not enough juice to start. very odd! So today, after jumpstarting it, i removed every fuse which wasn't vital so we'll see if that helps. The only other thing I can possibly thing of that draws juice even when the car is off, is the power seats, yet there is no fuse for that - how do I disconnect the power seat control? Can you think of anything else that could possibly be draining the battery?

Have you thought about the possibility that your battery is shot and just can't hold a charge?

of course; that's the first thing I checked, the battery is fine. It holds the charge except when something is draining it, which is the case here..

I don't know the history of your troubles.

I take it you have determined you have a drain on the battery.

As the other poster mention batteries can drain themselve over night no problem if faulty.

Is it an intermitant drain or when ever you leave the van it drains the battery over night??

Have you done a quick drain test? Like removing a battery cable and placing one end of a 12volt test light on the batter post and the other on the battery cable you removed. If the test light shines bright (current flowing) you got a good drain.

If you have an inductive amp probe you can find the drain in a matter of minutes by tracing back on the wires to the source.

More info would help.

the problem is indeed intermittent... we can go for days or weeks without it dying then all of a sudden one morning, go to start it and it's dead... I don't understand what you're talking about with the light test?

Disconnecting a battery pole and then reconnecting the pole to the car through a small 12v light will make the light shine if there is a significant drain, but depending on the wattage of the bulb used, it may not reveal small currents. IN fact this is the economy version of an ammeter, and instead of a needle, you see the filament shine.

Again, you will have to find the culprit just as it maniofests itself. Make sure the glove box light, the engine compartment light, interior lights are positively off: turn the switch off for interior lights, disconnect engine comprtment light. These small items can play tricks.
Based on my '93 diagrams, Electric seat breaker is in the convenience center...I think you had finally found it way back below the glove comprtment. I do not remember the age of your battery.....if more than 5 year old, stray battery plate chunks happen to fall and short a cell at random times.
EDIT: OK about 1 year old as replied here: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2941298#post2941298
Wlile it is not totally excluded a 1 year battery can die, it is improbable though.....

So we went out to the garage to get something and there was that power hum again. If you recall, a month or so ago, I completely disconnected and removed the rear air compressor (for nothing) as we thought that is what the problem was. Apparently not, as we discovered today.

So being able to hear the humm loud and clear, I went in the van and removed each fuse until the noise stopped. Looked at the label for the fuse... get ready... FUEL PUMP!

Where to go from here now that I know what the problem is? Called Pep Boys and asked about replacing it and they said it's probably not the fuel pump but something in the computer that is causing it to stay ON...

Any suggestions?
