Hi guys. I have a 96 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0. I get an occasional *coolant sensor bad* message in the information display. This happens intermittently, it will flash on showing the radiator flashing red in the car sketch followed by the message. It doesnt stay on all the time. I have been getting poor gas mileage around 11-12 mpg in town following a fresh tune-up. It runs great, just very annoying. Since I dont have access to a hand-held im wondering if it is actually the coolant sensor or is it another problem causing the coolant sensor to show its bad? If anyone has had experience with this please elaborate. Also if you know the location of this sensor Id appreciate your help. Thanks!

Check for trouble codes using the key on/off method.

Put the key in the ignition and turn the key to run (not start), then off, then run, then off, then run (that's 3 runs and 2 offs). Leave the key in the run position. The check engine light will turn on for a few seconds, then turn off, then (sometimes after 20-30 seconds) start flashing. The flashes are counting out 2-digit trouble codes. Fast flashes count up each digit, with a longer pause between digits. 55 indicates the end of all codes. Once you've got your code list, see what they mean.
