1998 transport won't idle and stalls

My transport has about 168,000KM's on it. Now a few times over the last year I guess its acted up.

What happens is you start up go for a drive then when you pull up to a stop it will have trouble idling and stall. It starts right back up again though. Sometimes is still has trouble iding and sometimes it clears up.

Its very intermitant which is very frusterating!! If it would only do it when I'm at home in my shop I could play around with it.

I usually gets a lean 02 code. Sometimes it sets a code and sometimes it doesn't. I have a code reader but no scan tool.

I have replaced the upstream O2 sensor the last time it acted up in January. Then it was stalling off and on for a week about. I came home late with it screwing up but I couldn't work on it that night.

Next morning it ran fine as it was cold still. So before went for a drive I took my small hammer and tapped on the MAF and EGR valve. Well after that the stupid thing has worked till the last week. I wish I would have made it act up before I gave it the "tap" test!!!

I know its something simple. I was thinking maybe a sticky/dirty EGR valve. I've seen them do similar things on other vehicles when they pull off the highway to a stop the egr sticks open causing the car to stall etc.

Also the MAF sensor can do silly things too.

I used to do this sort of thing for a living 10 years ago. So I'd like to just fix it myself. Wife says I should take it in. But I know if I take into GM and it doesn't stall or produce codes their gonna just give it a educated guess diagnoses.

So have any of you guys seen this problem on a 1998 transport??

Typical EGR valve syndrome. THis is really the place to start with....and it will most problably and almost certainly end there. Check e-bay.

Well since I posted this stalling message the van has ran like a charm. Typical of it though may not act up again for months.

Priced out the EGR valve haven't ordered it yet though. Not cheap $180 at Canadian Tire is the best deal I found so far. I sure would like it to act up again when I have a chance to verify the problem in my shop.

Update

While changing spark plugs on it I found a vacuum line off under the van. It was unhooked from a plastic vacuum canister in front of the right rear tire. I hooked the line back up and it's been working fine ever since no more stalling so far.
