1994 Camry shaking and loud noise while braking

Hi, My 1994 camry 6v with 42 thous miles (automatic) is shaking and making loud noises when braking at 20 - 15 mph. It sounds like your going over a grated bridge.
The stranger thing is if I take my foot off the brake and start braking at 15 mph and lower there is no shaking or noise.
I just had the timing belt changed and the water pump. The check engine light is on but the mechanic says it shows no problems.
The mechanic drained the transmission fluid and put a cleaner in it and said keep driving it!
I read somewhere that the 1994 camry was recalled for the steering, that a nut could come loose?? could this be the problem?
I bought the car last year and it has been a dream car up until now. Has anybody had this problem and/or any ideas? 4 mechanics do not know what is wrong and rule out the brakes. I am afaid to drive it!

If the problem only occurs while braking, then I would assume you have a brake problem. I can't understand why it could be anything else. Why do you think this problem is related to anything else?

The recall on the 94 Camry was to tighten (retorque) the nut that holds the steering wheel on to the steering column. Unless you can move the steering wheel back and forth (towards and away from you), this is not your problem.

I agree with jstinton, if it only happens while braking, then it's most likely a brake related problem. I would suspect warped front brake rotors. I would find another mechanic; one who will remove the front wheels and put a dial indicator on the front brake rotors and rotate them to find out exactly how much lateral runout the rotors have. If this is within specification, then I would have someone carefully inspect the front suspension. This is not something to fool around with. Get it checked out by a compenent front end specialist.
