hello,

My wife's '98 Venture's fan will only work on level 5 (high). Levels 1 thru 4 do not work. Is this an easy fix or do I have to replace the whole fan motor? Thank you in advance for all those who reply.

Scott

Depends on where the problem lies. It could be a faulty switch, wiring, or the motor. Are you getting voltage at the fan for positions 1-4?

Sounds like it is the blower motor resistor. It isn't a hard job. The resistor is located by the blower motor.

I agree with gls02. Sounds exactly like the resistor block is gone. They set this unit within the blower motors path to cool it down. Unfortunetely with this comes moisture and corrosion which often ends the life of this part. They are roughly $38.00. Do it yourself and save! Good luck.

I third the motion...........This is the same problem and solution I had with my Wife's 99. I paid $40 Cnd from GM.

Remove the old one and you should be able to "ring" it out if you have an ohmeter to determine if it is the problem.

It is possible that it could be other things too. There is a relay that switches the resistor block into the circuit so that could also be an area to look at. It if will not switch then the blower could be stuck at high.

Thank you to all who suggested the Blower Motor resistor. I bought one yesterday ($40) and installed it after work. Works great! But what a hassle to install! Two of the three bolts holding this thing in place are virtually non-accessible. Thank God my neighbor had one of those flexible shaft ratchet handle drivers. I couldn't have finished the job without it.

Thanks again

Oh Yeah..I forgot about that. In fact if I remember correctly 2 of the 3 only needed to be loosened as the assembly could then be slided (slid?) out.
