I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee, in-line 6 4X4 with an oil leak. It is losing about a quart a week. I was told that it is a bad rear seal and to replace it the engine has to be yanked and the transmission dropped. This seems kind of extreme so I am wondering is this information correct and how difficult is it to replace this part? Otherwise the Jeep is running fine so I would like to keep it going. Can anyone help me with this?

if its the rear main seal, you just have to drop the oil pan to change it.its a 2 piece seal

If i remember correctly on my old 87 Cherokee and 93 G/C they had to shift the transmission rearward to gain room to install the seal along with droping oilpan.
I believe that their is a tool (I'm not sure if modified or manufactured) that's used to insert the seal by just dropping the oilpan.
