Which is the best way to go for a D16Y7?

I would like to keep the enigne and don't want to go through the hell of swapping. I want to keep it at a cost efficient budget.

EDIT: I have also heard you can get a head and ecu swap from a EX? Would that make it a vtec(like, would it switch the cams and everyting inside it?) Also, would that be a lot of hard work for very little hp gain?

You see, I own a '99 DX and my friend owns a '95 ex. His car has a salvage title and has 120,xxx miles. He bought it for $100 and it was on blocks for a month while his father did body work to it. It is also in several colors. He knew my car wasn't a vtec, but pretended he didn't and kept asking me if mine was a vtec like his was. He also asked if he could have my dx badges so he could keep his car stock and make it a sleeper(wtf?). He usually isn't an asshole to me, but I think he is jelous because his family has never owned a car worth over $300.

I'm just wondering if I can get the head/ecu of a D16Y8 and make it about the same hp? Also, the intake manifold looks different on the ex than on the dx. Does it have an advantage?

at very least mini me it.
mini me + HMT setup will net you most gains for least cash.

I'll go do some research on that and get back to you.:P

EDIt: Did a little research and realized I should have looked for an ex.
This obviously isn't a bolt-on job, and I can't find a faq for my particular year.

If I were to do this, how much would it cost at the end? I suck at wiring and would need a friend to help me with that. A whole new ECU doesn't sound easy, but it sounds like the head would bolt right on.(would need a new valve cover, too?:( I have a bunch of questions for it, but should I ask them on a different board, or maybe there is a faq on this somewhere? I'll go search.;)

wow after reading this you just earned 60987096487096870 points of E respect.

good stuff as far as the ecu that bolts in just sits where old one does. There is some wiring for the swap. Nothing to be too scared of. I've heard of people making mini me harnesses if your really worried about it.

And anything else ask away.

honestly :bigthumb: to you

Thank you.:) This is my first car and I would rather just get my hands dirty and get some experience than have it actually fast. Nobody puts more than a new exhaust on a car in my city. I have also learned that the Y8 intake mani bolts right on. Just the right time for one of those nice CAI's, I'd say.:D

I am extremely short on cash, but if I can afford it, I will get a digital camera to keep people posted on this project.

if you can find the y8 head for cheap do it. else just swap in the y8 intake manifold(very simple, cheap and effective)

then spend the other money on a hmt kit and clutch and fly and you'll be good to go

if you need help on what parts to buy etc for a kit shoot me a pm i'll help you out

Guys, what about a turbo?

I have been searching, and have read that t-25's are popular to put in d16's.

Would I need internal work done for under 10psi? I know these turbo's aren't much, but they are cheap, they spool fast, and are for the most part, reliable. I would love to be able to spin 2nd from a roll.

Someone with the exact same engine as me that was making 168whp and 163wtq at 7psi. Here are the specs on a Z6 sedan...

205.2 WHP/ 196 TQ @ 10-11psi
13.04 @ 103.42 MPH

4DR EG
D16Z6: Stock
DSM T25
STD Manifold
DSM 450's
DSM BOV
Custom dual core IC
2.5" straight exhaust
Uberdata

That doesn't seem that hard(except for actually trying to install it)l. If I were to do the mini me swap and this I could be very happy(would higher compression effect the amount of boost I can use?). I doubt all of those parts are expensive.
