yea its all those things only in 2wd and its inconsistent and hard to recreate in a lab, the lab being my street.

cant simulate it while the car is stopped or in Neutral. Doesnt happen all the time. First heard it a few weeks ago after I got 20" wheels put on.. took it back to the tire place and it wouldnt make the noise, said there was nothing they could do. it didnt happen again until today. took it to my dad and he thinks its the U-joints going out. drove home and it didnt make the noise the whole way back.
at first it sounded like an exaust pipe rattleing but thats all OK. since i just got the wheels i immediatly associated it with that. could the bigger wheels add extra stress to the drivetrain to cause this?

taking the driveshaft out to inspect tomorrow. ive seen similar posts dealing with 99 tahoes..I'm hoping its not the dreaded "slipyolk" that seems to have no permenant solution... any tips or help would be appreciated. my dad is pretty good with cars so I should have an update for you next week.

its funny my dad has a 97 too and all the same crap goes out around the same time on both of ours.

so to the 15 of you who looked at my post but had nothing to offer..

i fixed it today. the bearings in the rear U-joint were dust... literally
got a new U-joint and its all good now.
FYI- the factory u-joint removal requires the use of a torch.

check to see if the fuel lines are touching the body where they bend up over the transmission. if the do bend them down a little.

What would fuel lines have to do with noise like that when your on the gas and its not there when your just coasting?

when you load up the engine with torque the engine and transmission all rotate in their mounts due to the laws of physics. the fuel lines are connected to the engine so sometimes they move enough to make contact with the body. when the steel fuel lines contact the steel body they can make a hell of a racket due to the pulses from the injectors and fuel pump. it's kind of like pounding on a railroad track with a hammer.

if it don't make thet clink clunk sound all the time then it may be your transfer case going out. i have a 1997 2dr 4x4.and mind was doing the same thing i had to have the tranfer case rebuilt.and that fixed the problem.
