I just got my first car, '02 GTI 1.8T with tiptronic. I was planning on doing a lot of mods, but dont know too much about them. I wanted to keep it looking (and sounding) stock. I was wondering what mods to do, and more importand what order to do them in. Any advice would help alot, thanks.

Do stuff like exhaust and/or suspension and some wheels are always a decent place to start.

Congrats on getting the new car! I'm planning to get my 02 GTI 1.8T with tiptronic next month. You got any pics? :)

if you did not get the sport suspension... do suspension, if you did, chip

First of all you should get a chip- 46+ hp's(if you have the stock 150hp motor if you have the 180 hp then the addition is only 16hps or so), then intake, exhausts(I've looked into these they don't change the sound of the car that much). Then you should look into the Neuspeed turbo inlet & downpipes and a diverter valve from AWE Tunings website(made by Bailey Motorsports). All of these will get you to about 235 to 240 hp. If you want more then you should upgrade from the stock K03 to the larger K04 turbo charger available from Neuspeed and some other places. As far as cost goes the things that get you to 240 hp all together cost around $2000, but a new turbo can run from $2000-$3000.

Dont put any chip on your. Wait untill you have at least 20K miles then you can do that stuff , cause it's bad for your engine and exaust are you shure you wanna mess with it cause you have pretty good waranty
have fun

Be sure to get a GIAC Tiptronic chip.
And if you have to get a "intake", get the turn2 one, It actually works.

Might as well just go all show and audio on your car.
Tiptronic.......... Are you a girl?

No need for personal attacks.

It was not an attack, just merely a statement of my opinion. However in all reality putting $250 into a modifications that adds very meager performance and is more for the look and sound under the hood than anything is a waste of money. No matter how well an intake is engineered the actual performance numbers will all be around the same low gains. Of course if the whole intake system was modified with an intake with a bigger diameter, a bored out throttle body, a high flow intake manifold, and some high lift cams, the numbers will derastically increase. While I do disagree with your comment about the intake I do agree that GIAC is really the only chip to get next to a complete engine managment system. An amazing setup on the 1.8T would be a front mount intercooler, a higher flowing down pipe, the GIAC chip, any resputable exhaust, 268 degree lift cams, a bored out throttle body, high performance gaskets, a t4 turbo, aluminum flywheel, and better flowing fuel fuel system. :)

How's calling someone a girl not a personal attack?
Anyway, compared to spending $200 on a evo, injen, atp or aem "intake" that doesn't work, I don't consider it to be a waste of money.

My '03 GTI 1.8T is my first VW. When I hit 1000 miles on my car, I got chipped and added improvements as I went along. You can see them in my signature below. My car looks stock and the Milltek cat back is very quiet like stock. Good Luck!

Where is your sense of humor? I did not blatantly say, Tiptronic you must be a girl.... I was asking. You must be extremely uptight to take something so personally that wasn't even directed towards you.

what do chips do? where do u insert them?

y would they be bad??

Chips upgrade the computer to increase the boost, remap the fuel, etc....All to improve the cars performance. In the 1.8T, the computer has to be taken out and the chip inserted before putting it back in. When I purchased the Chip, I was given instructions on how to remove the computer and sent it out to be upgraded. There is such a big increase in power that you feel immediately.

Now now deak. :D Newbies need a place to learn, so why not behind a computer screen so they don't have to do to the dealer and get humiliated? (<--Spelling?)

:bloated: Yeah, it's important to be nice to Newbies (like me!) but let's be honest, anyone who's not even aware that there are computers involved in just about every aspect of how an engine functions probably shouldn't be driving one, much the less considering mods.

With that said, can you guys and girls answer these questions for me:

2002 GTI 1.8T Tiptronic 180 HP

Okay, so what's the story with increasing the pathetically slow shift time of the tip? Is there a "tip only" chip by GIAC? How much is it? Is it a permanent chip or can it be taken in and out to avoid detection? Will its effects show up on Diag Comps when I bring my car in to be servcied, if so, will it void my warranty?

I dunno....

-Matt

Yes, I agree that Tiptronic is not for the avid driver, however we must condone the fact that it DOES decrease shifting times! So, let the guy have his fun, but someone who does not know what or where the computer is on the car shoild do some research before you start dumping money into a warrantied car. I am quite fond of the 1.8T, however you will end up putting alot more into the car than you probably anticipate if it is not all done under a watchful eye. There are a ton of 1.8T's out there, just check around. Be careful as not to void the warranty with all of your mods - it is easy to do. I had a VW before the BMW and VW was very willing to cover warrantied items, take advantage of the warranty.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry, GIAC doesn't offer a chip for the transverse mounted 1.8t yet. They do however offer one for the longitudinal mounted 1.8t in the Passat.
You should email Andrea at sales@giacusa.com and ask them when they will release it. Once again, sorry for that.

If i'm not mistaken, UPsolute had a Tiptronic chip with them to to Oschersleben last year, I'll look into it.

Here is how it all works. If you want a car that you will be able to get a 12.0 second 1/4 mile out of @ 400hp tops, then the 1.8T is definitely the way to go. You will be most likely in the 4.0-4.5 second 0-60mph range after only spending a mere $6,000. If you want to run 10.0's buy a VR6 and plan on spending $12,000 at least on it. In any event, the best upgrade for your car would be to go to goapr.com and buy the APR stealth chip. This chip will take your car to 215/247 hp/torque respectively and it has a stealth mode that makes the VW factory unable to detect it. Thus, maintaining your warranty. You will not be able to just buy the chip and call it quits however. Being that your chip will be running 14-18 lbs of boost opposed to the factory settings of 6-7 lbs of boost, you will need a good diverter valve. This will cool off your turbo and allow it to "blow off some steam"when you shift thus allowing it to function alot more efficiently. Also, I would look into getting a K and N drop in air filter. The P-Flo's and forced induction's make your engine alot louder and can also mess up your mass airflow sensor/meter. I had to replace mine after a month of having a P-flo on it. Being that you will be taking more air in because of the K and N filter you will want a way to get the air out. So I recommend a Supersprint Exhaust. This exhaust will make your car have a stronger exhaust tone but it wont be loud like some of these little Honda Civic's with the huge "coffee can" universal exhausts. Those "coffee can" Exhausts actually end up decreasing your HP because it lets too much exhaust out at one time thus creating a lack in backpressure which is what starts the combustion process up all over again.I hope this helps. If any else needs help my email is RickyB80@gra.midco.net
